India aims to become global hub for green hydrogen, says PM Modi | India News – Times of India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called on the global scientific community to help shape policy for the green hydrogen sector at the 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen.
Addressing the summit, PM Modi said, “I urge the global scientific community to come together to explore various aspects. Scientists and innovators can suggest changes in government policies to help the green hydrogen sector. We want to make India a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen.”
Prime Minister Modi said India was the first G20 country to meet its targets. Paris Agreement commitments on green energy, achieving this nine years ahead of the 2030 target. “India’s installed non-fossil fuel capacity has grown by almost 300 percent in the last decade. Our solar capacity has grown by over 3,000 percent in the same period. But we are not resting on our laurels. We remain focused on strengthening existing solutions,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the benefits of green hydrogen, particularly in decarbonising sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as refineries, fertilisers, steel and heavy transport. He cited India’s National Green Hydrogen Missionwhich aims to stimulate innovation, infrastructure and investment in the sector.
Union Minister of Oil and natural gasHardeep Singh Puresaid India’s natural advantages in green hydrogen production come from its cheap solar energy and strong electricity grid.
“India’s installed solar capacity has increased 32 times from 2.6 GW in 2014 to 85.5 GW. The country also has one of the largest synchronous grids, which can handle intermittent renewable energy. India is poised to lead the global demand for green energy with rising domestic demand across sectors,” Puri said.
Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi said: “India is set to become a major global player in the green hydrogen market, which is why we have launched the Green Hydrogen Mission. By integrating green hydrogen into India’s energy mix and industrial processes, we will strengthen our global positioning and achieve environmental and social goals,” while stressing that green hydrogen is an important part of sustainability.
