NEW DELHI: The INDIA bloc on Tuesday unveiled its manifesto for the upcoming Jharkhand elections, promising an increase in reservations for Scheduled Tribes (STs), Scheduled Castes (SCs) and other Backward Classes (OBCs). The manifesto promises to increase reservation for STs from 26% to 28%, SCs from 10% to 12% and OBCs from 14% to 27%.
‘7 guarantees’ for social justice and well-being
The election manifesto, branded as the ‘seven guarantees’, also outlines ambitious welfare measures. Chief among them is creating 10 lakh jobs for the youth and providing health insurance of up to Rs 15 lakh to economically disadvantaged families.
“INDIA bloc will provide 10 lakh jobs to youth and Rs 15 lakh healthcare to the poor,” Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge announced during the manifesto release along with Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and RJD leader JP Yadav .
Countering criticism from Prime Minister Modi
Kharge took the opportunity to respond to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s criticism of Congress’s assurances. “Every time we talk about guarantees, Prime Minister Modi criticizes them. However, Congress is delivering on its promises, unlike Modi’s unfulfilled assurances,” he said.
Additional promises: Affordable basic necessities and increased rations
To further address the economic challenges faced by the residents of Jharkhand, the INDIA bloc pledged to increase free monthly ration from 5 kg to 7 kg per person and reduce the price of gas cylinders to Rs 450.
Prime Minister Hemant Soren emphasized the bloc’s commitment to these guarantees, stating: “The next government will move forward with these promises.”
Election timeline
The elections to the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly are scheduled for November 13 and 20, and counting of votes is scheduled for November 23. The INDIA bloc’s manifesto aims to address social justice, employment and welfare issues, which could potentially influence the election outcome.
