NEW DELHI: India is “setting the stage for the next 1,000 years and is focused not just on getting to the top but on sustaining that position” to give the world a sense that this is the best option for the 21st centuryPrime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday, laying out the foundations of policy priorities for his third term.
“Not just India, the whole world believes that India is the best bet for the 21st century,” he told investors at the Fourth renewable energy The summit in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, emphasised that the country’s diversity, size, capacity, potential and achievements are all unique and pave the way for Indian solutions for global applications.
Modi cited the decisions taken in the first 100 days of his term, such as the construction of 7 crore houses for the poor in addition to the 4 crore already distributed, to emphasise that his third term is a result of a pro-people policy aimed at supporting “140 crore citizens of India who are determined to make India the third largest economy in the world and a developed nation by 2047″.
“Aspirations of India are the reason behind the re-election of the government for the third term,” the prime minister said, adding that the 140 crore citizens, the youth and women believe that their aspirations will take a new flight during the current term. “The poor, dalits and the deprived believe that the third term of the government will be a guarantee for a dignified life,” he said.
The Prime Minister said India has chosen a green path with renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, nuclear and hydropower to achieve its ambition of becoming a developed country by 2047.
He called the government’s rooftop solar project, ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ (PM Rooftop Solar Project), an example to the world. According to him, it will transform every household in India into an energy producer.
He drew on Mahatma Gandhi to underscore the roots of India’s climate commitment. He cited Gandhi’s wisdom that “the earth has enough resources to satisfy our needs, but not our greed,” and said this vision came from India’s great tradition.
As a developing country, India had a valid excuse not to adhere to these commitments, but it did not choose that path, Modi said. “Words like ‘green future’ and ‘net zero’ are not nice words, but the needs and obligations of the Union and every state government of India.”
