Inside Delta’s newest and largest airport lounge in the world as part of its $1.5 billion investment in JFK – complete with a fine-dining restaurant, $10,000 massage chairs and an outdoor terrace

Delta Air Lines has opened the long-awaited business and first class lounge at JFK, as part of its $1.5 billion investment at the New York airport.

DailyMail.com has been granted access to the Delta One lounge in Terminal 4 before its official opening to the public, and its size will impress even the most seasoned lounge visitors.

The space, which at 3,600 m2 is almost as large as three Olympic swimming pools, is divided into different areas. There is, among other things, a large food court, an atmospheric restaurant with refined food, a chic bar, a lounge with a fireplace and a covered terrace that is open all year round and overlooks the runway.

To help travelers relax before their flight, there’s also a mini spa, featuring five state-of-the-art Human Touch massage chairs (which retail for more than $10,000), a treatment room and sleeping pods with reclining seats.

To book a treatment, there are touchscreen kiosks in the lounge where visitors can select a time slot using their email address or telephone number.

While the food court in the Delta One Lounge serves fresh sweets, salads, cheese boards, desserts and a small selection of hot dishes, the restaurant offers an extensive a la carte menu

Leading off from the ‘wellness area’ is a ‘serenity lounge’ with soft lighting and spaced out seating to further aid relaxation. Another impressive feature of the lounge is the shower suites.

To avoid queues, there are eight shower rooms with a hotel-like feel, featuring attractive marble and herringbone details, an illuminated mirror and products from luxury body care brand Grown Alchemist.

A spokesperson for Delta Air Lines told DailyMail.com that the majority of customers flying on Delta One are business travelers.

For this reason, the shower suites have closets next to them where travelers can leave their shirts that they would like to have steamed and ironed by a member of the valet team.

A shoe shine service is also offered.

The lounge is only open to travelers flying Delta One, the airline’s equivalent for business and first class.

This class is only available on long-haul international flights and certain long-haul domestic flights.

Delta Air Lines therefore does not expect the lounge to ever reach full capacity.

There are a total of 515 seats in the premium facility and for travelers who can make private calls, there are eight soundproof booths.

The restaurant seats 140 guests and has a neat appearance with striking lamps. You can also choose to sit at the bar or at the table.

There are three courses for lounge visitors to enjoy and a staff member told DailyMail.com that the standout dishes were the steamed Prince Edward Island mussels in a green curry sauce to start, while the Wagyu steak and chips was a ‘must-try’ from the outlet.

For dessert, there is currently a dark chocolate soufflé, an orange olive oil upside-down cake, a New York cheesecake and a brownie with chocolate mousse and a dollop of marshmallow fluff.

As for drinks, the lounge drinks menu has been created by a sommelier and a mixologist. The drinks range from champagne to an espresso martini.

For health-conscious travelers there is also a unique offer in the form of a ‘wall of waters’.

Next to the spa, several gold taps hang on the wall, each offering a different drink, including beetroot juice, a mixture of orange and ginger juice, and strawberry infused water.

To complete the chic look, Delta Air Lines has partnered with luxury fashion house Missoni for the interior, which includes accent pillows, trendy vases and coffee table books.

Missoni has also partnered with the airline to offer branded toiletry bags.

Claude Roussel, Vice President of Sky Club and Lounge Experience, commented on Delta’s mission regarding the lounge design: ‘We want all of our guests to receive a highly personalized and dedicated service.

‘It is not enough to have beautiful spaces and an exceptional offering. Premium lounge customers should feel welcome and known when they enter, just as they would at their favorite hotel or restaurant.

‘We look forward to offering every guest a warm welcome and ensuring that ‘premium’ feels personal to him or her.’

In addition to the exclusive Delta One Lounge at JFK, there is a Delta Sky Club lounge that is accessible to travelers with a Delta Sky Club membership or a premium cabin ticket with Delta or a partner airline.

American Express Platinum cardholders were previously able to use the lounges, but in January Delta Air Lines announced it would tighten restrictions on lounge access to reduce crowds.

From now on, travelers with a basic economy ticket will no longer have access to the lounge, regardless of whether they have an American Express Platinum card or another premium credit card.

Delta Air Lines, headquartered in Atlanta, currently offers the most flights and seats of any airline at JFK, with a total of more than 200 peak-day departures to more than 90 domestic and international destinations.
