Instagram may change the way you upload photos and videos
Instagram is currently testing a new way to upload media, CEO Adam Mosseri revealed Friday. The pilot will allow select users to upload photos and videos in a vertical grid format without having to crop the content into a square. The development builds on recent changes the platform has made, including an expanded limit on media uploads in the carousel, which eliminates the need to split collections into multiple posts.
Vertical grids on Instagram
In an Instagram Story shared on Friday, Adam Mosseri shared details about the new experiment. “A small number of people” can now upload vertical grids instead of squares on the social media platform. Speaking about the change, Mosseri pointed out that the square format is a carryover from previous years, when Instagram only allowed users to post content in that format. However, the “vast majority of what’s uploaded to Instagram today is vertical,” he noted.
Users typically upload content in an aspect ratio of 4:3 for photos and 9:16 for videos, and “cropping it to a square is pretty brutal.” The Instagram CEO noted that this change could impact users who spend time checking to make sure everything lines up before uploading media.
“I hope we can find a way to manage this transition,” he said.
In a proposition Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai told The Verge that they will listen to community feedback before rolling out “anything further.”
Vertical profile grids on Instagram were the first spotted in 2022 by tipster Alessandro Paluzzi. The tipster suggested at the time that the social media platform could potentially let users switch between a square grid and a 4:5 format, giving users more choice when posting content.
Instagram began testing the feature last year with just a handful of users, and the testing phase now appears to be expanding. Gadgets 360 staffers were unable to verify the feature’s availability. However, users across social media platforms have reported seeing the new profile grid format.
