Interiors pro shares the tacky bauble mistake we all make
IT’S almost that time of year again, which means people across the country are preparing to dust off their Christmas tree decorations.
But first, a few tidbits: An interior designer has shared a handy tip you might want to know — and it’s completely free.
On TikTok, Dylan Palmer revealed the simple mistake beginners make time and time again when decorating.
“If you’re hanging your jewelry and it has long strings on it, in my opinion there’s nothing more messy than that long string,” he explained.
Dylan showed off a glittering gold bauble and hung it from the branch of the decorated tree to prove his point.
However, you don’t need any special DIY skills or more expensive Christmas decorations to solve this festive problem; the solution won’t even cost you a cent and takes just a few seconds.
Simply hang your bauble as you normally would, but instead of letting it dangle, wrap it around the branch a few times until you can no longer see it.
“Hold it in place and wrap it around until it fits snugly so the string is not visible and it is exactly flush with the branch,” he explained.
You can also play with this method with where on the branch you want the bauble to sit.
Just move it further in or out depending on what you think looks best, and voila!
Other Christmas fans loved the simple yet impressive decorating hack and couldn’t wait to try it out this year.
“In all these years it never occurred to me to do this, thank you,” someone commented on the viral clip on social media.
A second thought the same, writing: “Why didn’t I ever think of that? You’re a genius.”
“I hate long hanging ornaments too, why didn’t I know I could do this?” someone else commented.
Another pointed out that the baubles would be safer if they used Dylan’s method. They said: “Great tip – and safer with kids and pets running around!”
“Something so simple makes it so much better, thanks for that tip,” chimed in another party fanatic.
But not everyone was convinced of the hack, as some thought removing the tree would be too much of a task.
“I would throw the whole tree out the window because I have no patience to undo what I’ve done,” one woman joked.
“All I can think of is the nightmare it will be if you don’t decorate the tree,” someone else wrote.
“Great idea but I don’t think I can be bothered to unwrap them again lol,” another agreed.
Tips for the perfect Christmas tree
Maintain a balance
You also don’t want too many ribbons/lights/or decorations on one part of the tree. When preparing your decorations, make sure there is a good balance.
You don’t want all the same size baubles or all the same colored decorations, as the saying goes, “Life is about balance”, so your Christmas tree should have variety too.
Have a theme in mind
Everyone has a different sense of style, so why not bring your own theme to your tree this year.
This could revolve around something your family loves together, or introducing bolder colors that you’ve been afraid to try before.
This eliminates the need to go to every store and spend a lot of time looking for decorations as you get ideas about what you want. For inspiration, check out the major department store displays, such as the tree in John Lewis.
Be picky with your decorations
The decorations form a tree, so don’t just buy the first one you see, look around to find exactly what you want.
Having a theme can help with this, but you might broaden your horizons if you’re used to going to the same stores for Christmas decorations.
Remember, you don’t have to buy expensive decor to get the one you love; many Christmas bargains can be found in Poundland, Wilko and Primark.
Finish it
Make sure you choose the right tree topper to give your tree the designer look.
Consider the size of your ceiling and don’t be afraid to be different with a giant bow instead of a gold star.
Also, a homemade tree topper can work perfectly if you can’t find one that matches your theme.
How do you care for your real Christmas tree?
HERE’S what you need to know when buying a real Christmas tree:
First things first: buy a jar (if it isn’t already in).
You should treat your tree like a houseplant and give it water and attention.
Make sure the container has good drainage. It’s a good idea to put something underneath to catch the excess water.
Check the soil every day to make sure it is not drying out.
If it feels dry, give it some water. If it still feels damp, leave it alone as too much water can also kill a tree.
Also check that the LED bulbs of your tree lights are not too hot, as this can burn them, and keep your tree away from radiators.
Once Christmas is over, try planting it in the garden so you can dig it up and use it again next year.
However, it is a good idea to remove it from the pot when you replant it, as large trees do not survive well in pots as their roots need room to grow.
