Apple fans call this launch the most disappointing yet
Following today’s launch event, viewers took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their impressions of the iPhone 16, Apple Watch, AirPods and new details about Apple Intelligence.
Not everyone was impressed.
‘This has got to be the most disappointing updates to iPhone, and the most boring Apple Event I have watched in years,’ wrote X user Callum John.
‘If the [Apple] Watch Series 10 still gets you 1 day of battery power, it might as well be a series 1.0,’ X user Henri Helvetica posted.
‘The Apple Event was kinda underwhelming… Lots of cool things and they’re all VERY solid products, but I’m not feeling particularly driven to get any of the new items…’ X user Ghazi posted.
iPhone 16 Pro will start at $999
The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 and the Pro Max is on sale for $1,199.
Both models will be available for pre-order after the event and ship on September 20.
New cameras for iPhone 16 Pro
There’s a new 48MP fusion camera for iPhone 16 Pro. It will have a 2nd generation quad-pixel sensor to capture information faster.
Pro phones will also get a 12MP telephoto lens with 5x zoom. So both the 16 Pro and the Pro Max will get the tetraprism telephoto camera.
New Photographic Styles will allow you to adjust color, highlights and shadows on skin tone in your images. You can also select specific areas in an image to only adjust the appearence of one section.
As you edit your photos, you can see real-time previews using the Camera Control button to scroll through different Photographic Styles.
Bigger isn’t always better! Shivali’s take
‘The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are verging on tablets,’ Best said, ‘with the two boasting a whopping 6.9 inch display.’
‘Personally, I think that’s too big – you’ll struggle to fit it in your pocket or use it with one hand!’ she continued.
‘The thin borders are lovely though, and I like the new Desert Titanium color,’ which is like a metallic bronze.
‘Although, I think it’s a shame these Pro models don’t come in the same fun color range as the iPhone 16,’ she said.
Apple’s new powerful chip
Apple announced its new A18 with an upgraded 16-core neural engine that is up to two times faster for machine learning – a critical upgrade to support Apple Intelligence.
It also features 17 percent more memory bandwith and is 60 pecent faster than the CPU in the iPhone 12.
A18 uses a 35 percent less power than Apple’s A16 bionic chip launched in the iPhone 15 and is 30 percent faster.
iPhone 16 will start at $799
iPhone 16 starts at $799 and $899 for the iPhone 16 plus.
Apple said users can get up to $800 for trading in older smartphones from the iPhone 12.
Apple announces Camera Control Button
Apple announces the Camera Control button that is a completely new feature, which is a physical button that lives on the side of your iPhone.
A simple push of the button opens the camera app and a second push snaps a photo.
To shoot videos, you just have to click and hold.
Was iPhone 16 worth the wait? Shivali’s take
Science and Tech editor Shivali Best offers her take on the iPhone 16’s new design and features.
‘The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus colours look gorgeous – I love the ultramarine finish,’ said Best.
‘Glad to see the Action Button has been added, having been missed off the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus last year.’
‘The Camera Control button sounds like a fun feature for budding photographers – excited to try it!’
Apple Intelligence unveiled
Apple Intelligence will have the power to run multiple generative AI models on your compatible iPhone.
Private Cloud Compute will allow you to maintain your data privacy and security while still tapping into these AI features.
What’s more, 100% of the data centers that will support the AI platform will run on renewable energy, Apple said.
New AI features include generative writing tools, custom ‘Genmoji’ generation, a smart photo library, and Siri upgrades to make interacting with the digital assistant more natural and effective – including the ability to type to Siri instead of speaking.
You’ll also have the ability to search for something simply by snapping a photo of it. If you come across a bike that you’re interested in buying, for example, just take a picture and your iPhone will search for for it on the web.
After lagging behind competitors like Google and Amazon in the AI race, this launch marks a big step forward for Apple.
‘Apple is copying Google with that visual intelligence tool, Google Lens came out years ago,’ Best said.
iPhone 16 announced
The new iPhone 16 will be 50 percent tougher than previous iPhone models, come in three new colors – ultramarine, teal and pink – and include a customizable action button that lets you record voice memos, indentify a song or translate a phrase.
Users have been skeptical of the customizable action button’s effectiveness since it was first rumored to roll out with the iPhone 15 Pro. Many people think it will meet hte same fate as the MacBook’s touchbar, a feature that Apple scratched due to lack of consumer interest in 2023.
But perhaps most importantly, it will be fully compatible with Apple Intelligence, Apple’s very own AI platform. That means it will have a bunch of new AI features at the core of its functionality.
AirPods 4 will start at $129
AirPods 4 will start at $129, and the Pro model will start at $179.
Both will be available for pre-order after the event and will ship on September 20.
Health features for AirPods Pro 2
AirPods Pro 2 will feature noise reduction technology to provide hearing protection.
These new AirPods will also be able to perform a clinical hearing test in just five minutes to check your hearing health. The results will be stored ‘privately and securely’ in the Health app along with the rest of your health data.
Finally, they will provide a clinical grade over the counter hearing aid feature that boosts the specific sounds you need in real time and help you hear your surroundings better.

Some of their new features include the ability your head yes or no in response to Siri anouncements, improved sound quality, and a smaller more streamlined case.
The Pro model will also feature active noice canceling, a wireless charging case and a ‘conversation awareness’ that automatically adjusts your volume when you’re speaking to someone.
DailyMail.com tech editor’s take on the new watch
‘The larger screen and brighter display look really good, and I really like the new jet black finish!’ said DailyMail.com Science and Technology editor Shivali Best.
‘As someone who hates sitting around waiting for my watch to charge, the fast charging (30 mins to 80%) sounds like a bit of a game changer,’ she added.
But she expected to see more added health features in this new lineup.
Apple Watch 10 will start at $399
The Apple Watch Series 10 will start at $399, and the cellular version will cost $499.
You can pre-order them today after the event, and the watch will ship on September 20.
Apple Watch Series 10 updates will include sleep apnea detection, digital keyboard
Apple officials have confirmed rumors that the Apple Watch Series 10 will come with a new sleep apnea detection feature.
The device does this by tracking breathing disturbances while you’re sleeping, then analyzing that data every 30 days to determine whether you may be suffering from this condition.
And with this new watch design, you’ll be able to type messages directly on the screen instead of relying on voice-to-text thanks to the addition of a digital keyboard.
Apple Watch Series 10 announced
CEO Tim Cook has kicked off today’s launch event with the unveiling of Apple Watch Series 10.
The new watch will feature the biggest display and thinnest design ever. It’s 10 percent thinner and 30 percent larger than the Series 9 watches.
This will allow users to see an additional line of text, type messages more easily and give the device a sleeker and more steamlined appearence.
It will also come with the first ever polished-aluminum finish. It comes in three colors, jet black, rose gold, and silver.
What’s more, it will take only 30 minutes to charge Apple Watch 10 up to 80 percent.

Apple CEO Tim Cook tweets photo from Apple Park
We’re less than two hours away from the start of today’s event. CEO Tim Cook tweeted this photo from Apple Park in Cupertino.
X users are speculating that the image may be AI generated – perhaps to show off the capabilitites of Apple Intelligence.
Apple Store site is DOWN in anticipation of event
Apple typically takes its online store offline prior to a launch event so that it can prepare pages for its new products.
That means you can’t purchase any Apple products until the event ends later today. But today probably isn’t the best day to purchase a new iPhone or Apple device anyway.
Waiting until a few weeks after the launch gives you more time to determine whether the newest models are worth the pricetag, or if you would rather purchase a slightly older model for less money.
Update on virtual or augmented reality devices?
There’s no evidence to suggest that Apple will give an update on its Vision Pro, Apple Glasses or any new virtual or augmented reality devices today.
However, there has been some new leaked information about the Apple Glasses, which are expected to launch in 2027.
But we could have them, or a cheaper version of Vision pro, as early as 2025.
These lightweight AR spectacles will be different from the Vision Pro goggles in that they’re designed for everyday wear. They’re considered a direct competitor of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which launched in 2021.
The Apple Glasses are expected to launch with augmented reality and eye-scanning features, but little else is known about the functionality and design of this forthcoming product.
Potential surprise product debuts, including iPad mini 7
Apple could surprise us with a few unexpected device reveals during the event, including the iPad mini 7.
The iPad mini 6 came out in 2021, so this tablet is due for an upgrade.
The new mini is rumored to come with Apple Pencil Pro support, storage capacity and memory increases and a range of new color options.
Apple expected to unveil new Apple Watch and AirPods
In addition to the iPhone 16 lineup, new devices expected to launch at today’s event include the Apple Watch X and the AirPods 4.
Other devices that could launch today include the Apple Watch Ultra 3, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2, but these are less certain to appear.
The two models included in this new Apple Watch series are rumored to come with some exciting health-tracking features. That includes an updated heart rate and ECG sensor as well as an all-new sleep apnea detection feature.
Apple Watch could also be getting a makeover, with this new series expected to have a larger but slimmer screen design.
The new Airpods will likely offer improved sound quality over the AirPods 3, which came out in 2021. AirPods 4 will also be the first non-pro set to feature active noise cancellation, and will come with a new case with a built-in speaker.
A brief guide to Apple Intelligence: Apple’s very own AI platform
Apple is finally entering the AI race with the launch of Apple Intelligence.
The company has described the new software as a ‘personal intelligence system that puts powerful generative models right at the core of your iPhone, iPad and Mac.’
The new features packed into this platform include generative writing and image-making tools, the ability to create custom emojis (or Genmojis), and big improvements to Siri.
Apple’s foray into AI began with the introduction of their digital assistant, Siri, in 2011. But since then, the company has lagged behind competitors like Amazon and Google.
But with the launch of Apple Intelligence, the company is aiming to make its mark on the ‘conscious AI’ market.
iPhone 16 will support highly-anticipated AI features
iPhone 16 is Apple’s first phone lineup designed to support AI features.
At today’s event, the company is expected to unveil the standard 16 as well as the iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Each of these phones will be compatable with Apple Intelligence, Apple’s very own AI platform.
The iPhone 16 lineup won’t launch with Apple Intelligence right off the bat. While the new phones will become available for purchase today, the AI platform isn’t expected to roll out until the end of October, according to 9to5Mac.
iOS 18 packed with new features, including the ability to control your phone with your eyes
iOS 18 is expected to launch with a bunch of exciting new accessibilty features, including the ability to control your phone with just your eyes.
iPhone Eye Tracking will work on any iPhone that’s compatible with iOS 18. To enable this feature, go to Settings, tap Accessibility, swipe down and choose Eye Tracking and toggle it on.
Your phone will walk you through a brief calibration process so that it can learn to recognize your eye movements. Then, you will be able to navigate your screen, open apps and perform tasks inside apps all without ever touching your screen.
