iPhone 16 series may not offer ‘faster USB 3 speeds’

The iPhone 16 series launched to much fanfare on Monday at Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” event. During the event, the company showed off various hardware and software upgrades coming to the new generation of iPhone devices. However, it appears that the company’s wording about “faster USB 3 speeds” was taken out of context, and the tech giant isn’t actually offering any improved transfer speeds with the new iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max lineup.

iPhone 16 users may not get improved USB transfer speeds

The Cupertino-based tech giant, while listing the numerous upgrades coming to the iPhone 16 Pro models, stated that the new generation of Apple smartphones will feature “faster USB 3 speeds.” However, as a MacRumors report indicated, this may be a confusing wording from the company.

A look at the technical specifications of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models here And here reveals that the USB 2 and USB 3 transfer speeds for the base and Pro models are 480 Mbps and 10 Gbps respectively. Interestingly, the same speeds were available in the iPhone 15 Pro and non-Pro modelsIf that’s the case, there’s no real improvement in transfer speeds.

It seems that Apple actually wanted to communicate that the iPhone 16 Pro models, which are powered by the A18 Pro chipset, will offer faster data transfer speeds compared to the non-Pro models, which are powered by the A18 SoC.

However, the claim would hold true if the tech giant were to compare the transfer speed of the iPhone 16 Pro with that of the iPhone 14 Pro, the latest generation with the Lightning cable.

However, for those who want 10Gbps transfer speeds with the iPhone 16 Pro models, users will need the appropriate USB-C cable, which has to be purchased separately. USB 3 is notably the third generation of the Universal Serial Bus standard that offers faster data transfer speeds as compared to its previous versions.

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max also get a larger display, with a 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, respectively. The display also gets a 120Hz refresh rate (ProMotion) and up to 2,000 units peak brightness.
