ISRO unveils details of upcoming Bharatiya Antariksha station
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has announced the development of the Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS), a major project aimed at increasing India’s presence in space exploration. Weighing about 52 tons, the space station will initially house three astronauts, according to a report, with a future plan to expand its capacity to six. The capacity of the BAS was reportedly unveiled at the Kannada Technical Seminar held at the UR Rao Satellite Center in Bengaluru.
Designed for science and space tourism
ISRO’s BAS is being developed as a platform for interplanetary research, life sciences and medicine studies, an India Today researcher said. report. It is expected to play a crucial role in studying the effects of microgravity on human health and testing technologies needed to sustain life beyond Earth.
The space station is expected to be used for space tourism and resource utilization, which will mark India’s venture into commercial space applications.
Focus on sustainable space habitats
According to the release, ISRO has emphasized the need for creating sustainable habitats in space. This initiative is in line with the global trend of building infrastructures to enable long-term human presence in space. Efforts are underway to ensure the space station can support extended research missions.
With countries like the US and China moving forward with their space programs, India’s move to set up its own station reflects its commitment to becoming a prominent player in space exploration. According to reports, the BAS could also contribute to international collaborations, scientific research and inspiring younger generations to pursue space science.
The BAS is positioned to advance research, inspire innovation and open doors to new commercial opportunities. Although the project is still in the development phase, ISRO’s efforts are expected to contribute to the understanding of outer space and its potential for humanity.
