‘It teaches dishonesty’ Mom ashamed over Starbucks ploy to get free treats

A mother caused a stir after sharing a clever trick that allowed her to get free treats for children.

Like most retailers and stores, coffee giant Starbucks has also been raising prices to meet costs. But savvy mum Lauryn Clare recently revealed how to get fun things for kids without spending a dime.

The foodie shared the trick on Instagram, saying: ‘If you can’t afford to go to Starbucks with just the two of you, order a pupcup for your toddler.

“It’s free and they’ll be just as happy with it as they would be with a $5 subscription. [£3.80] cake pop,’ Lauryn, 34, caption the now viral clip.

The so-called pup cup is becoming increasingly popular. It is a cup the size of an espresso with a generous dollop of whipped cream in it. People can order it for free to give to their dog.

The mother, from Philadelphia, said she normally doesn’t buy from the coffee chain because she finds the prices “expensive,” but she had some money left over on a store credit.

According to the mother, she was in the car ordering a Starbucks drink when her little one woke up from a nap and she knew she wanted something.

“I knew Addie wanted something. So I asked, ‘Do you charge for puppy cups?’

“And the woman who took my order was like, ‘Oh my God, no. What’s your dog’s name?’” she said Today.

Lauryn claimed the barista knew the cup wasn’t for a furry friend, but apparently didn’t care about the brazen customer.

“She was totally fine with it,” Lauryn said.

Although the financially savvy mother was very happy with her trick, she received a lot of criticism online. People were fiercely against her for taking advantage of her trick.

Fantastic back-to-school deals you can’t miss!

“They once told me it was only for dogs!!!” one user exclaimed.

“That’s playing the system. She’s not a puppy,” another criticized the mother for the controversial move.

“It also teaches dishonesty,” someone else told Lauryn.

However, there were also plenty of people who didn’t mind the cheeky trick, while others came up with their own tricks to keep children happy in cafes.

“My daughter thinks they sell fruit snacks at coffee shops because I hand her a pack from my purse when they give me my drink,” one mother wrote.

“What they don’t know can’t hurt.”

Free Summer Holiday Activities

You don’t have to spend a dime to keep your kids entertained this summer…

Museums – Some museums offer free admission to certain exhibitions and also organize events for children.

Parks – Head to your local park to enjoy the playgrounds, play areas, courts and water play areas. Some even have trails for kids to enjoy.

Beach – It doesn’t have to be sunny to enjoy the beach. You can go rockpooling, crab hunting, sandcastle building or take a walk along the headland.

Library – If the weather is bad, go inside and borrow books, audiobooks and DVDs.

To cook – Host your own mini baking competition or join the Come Dine With Me challenge.

Playdates – Invite friends for a fun afternoon.

Board games – Play a game of Monopoly, a round of sibling rivalry, or rack your brain with Scrabble.

“In this economy? We both get a puppy cup,” chuckled a second.

There was also a comment from someone claiming to be a barista at the global chain, who said staff “don’t care” whether the cup is for dogs or humans.

“I know our prices, they are really expensive, and it shouldn’t be such a controversy to give your child something that makes him or her happy,” the person said.

“I can guarantee you that it will not cause any inconvenience, because it is for a child and not for a dog.”
