The former president, whose ear was covered in blood from a gunshot wound, was quickly taken away by Secret Service agents.
A local prosecutor said the suspected shooter and at least one person in the crowd were dead. The Secret Service said two bystanders were seriously injured.
About two and a half hours after the shooting, Trump posted a message on his social media platform Truth, saying a bullet “penetrated the upper part of my right ear.”
He said: ‘I knew straight away something was wrong. I heard a whooshing sound, shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through my skin.
‘There was a lot of blood loss, so that’s when I realized what was going on.’
It was the first time since Ronald Reagan in 1981 that a president or presidential candidate had been shot.
