The first time a mother was so impressed by the trick, she shared it on TikTok. Her video has since gone viral.

Gaby, who bears the name of @gabriellealbon on TikTok, shared a video to thank “whoever it was” who discovered the cheap trick to help her baby’s teething pain.

She tested it herself and said that spring onions are her favorite vegetable for her baby.

Gaby wrote in her video: “I can’t recommend spring onions enough for teething pain.”

She told the camera: “Can I thank whoever discovered that chives help with teething pain, because it really made a difference.

“Honestly, it was like magic.

“I don’t understand what it is or the science behind it, but it works.”

In Gaby and Ferne’s videos it appears that their babies are holding the spring onions (which cost just 15p per onion) and using them as a teething ring.

Gaby’s video went viral and was liked by more than 26,700 people.

Many rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts.

One grateful parent wrote: “Thanks for the tip, my wife and I will try this later.”

Gaby replied, “Honestly, life-saving!! You have to let me know how you get on!”

Another asked, “What should I do? Just let them chew?”

To which Gaby replied with a “yes.”

A third parent suggested, “Celery does this too! I’ve used it with all my babies. Frozen watermelon when they’re a little older.”

And Gaby replied, “I’ve heard of celery since I posted this, but frozen watermelon is something new!”

The trend has even been tried by reality star Ferne McCann, who also gave it a try TikTok-tto show off her baby Fenty, whom she welcomed with her fiancé Lorri Haines last July.

However, she said her baby wasn’t too fond of it.

Ferne wrote the following when she shared her video: “Has anyone else seen the viral video of that baby nibbling on a spring onion to help her teeth… My baby wasn’t having it at all!

“Don’t blame her.”

What is the science behind it?

Scallions, also known as green onions or spring onions, are sometimes used as a natural remedy for teething discomfort in babies. Here are a few reasons why scallions can be considered beneficial:

Texture: The firm yet slightly flexible texture of scallions can have a soothing effect on tender gums when a baby is teething.

Cooling effect: Spring onions are often stored in the refrigerator. The cool temperature can numb the gums and reduce discomfort.

Naturally: Unlike some commercial teething products that may contain chemicals or artificial ingredients, scallions are a natural option.

Antibacterial properties: Spring onions have a mild antibacterial effect, which can contribute to good oral hygiene.

However, it is important to be careful:

Choking hazard: Make sure the spring onion is large enough that the baby cannot swallow it and choke on it.

Allergic reactions: Be aware of any allergic reactions, as some babies may be sensitive to certain foods.

Overview: Always supervise your baby when using any teething aid, including spring onions.

It is always wise to consult a pediatrician before using any new teething remedies to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your baby.
