He said: “I fostered a few children and ended up not having my own bedroom anymore.

“So, with the help of a friend, I decided to convert my garage into a bedroom for myself.”

The selfless man was willing to make sure the foster children felt as comfortable as possible during their stay in his home.

The garage was initially full of junk, but luckily it was already insulated, so he could live in it just fine.

He said the only major work he had to do was insulating the garage roller door so that the wind wouldn’t blow through it.

After organizing the items in the garage, he began laying down some clean rugs to create a carpet on the floor.

He then moved on to a sold wooden bed, along with a chest of drawers and an Ikea Kallax unit for extra storage space.

To make the garage cozy, he placed a beautiful rattan chair in the corner of the room and a monstera plant for some greenery.

The finishing touches to the room were a giant dried leaf and hung art, creating a statement wall.

He added that he added a large white curtain to the garage to divide it into two rooms and create a walk-in closet.

How to convert a garage

Here are the basics of converting a garage into a living space

  • Insulate walls and ceiling: Garages are often not insulated. Add insulation to the walls and ceiling to make the space comfortable and energy efficient.
  • Installing floor coverings: Garages typically have concrete floors. Install an underlayment and choose a comfortable flooring material such as carpet, hardwood or laminate.
  • Upgrade electrical system: Make sure the garage has enough electrical outlets and lighting. You may need to add new circuits or upgrade the electrical panel.
  • Add plumbing (if needed):If you plan to build a bathroom or sink, you will need to extend the plumbing into the garage.
  • Expand HVAC system: Extend your home’s heating and cooling system to the garage. You can also install a separate unit, such as a ductless mini-split system.
  • Installing Windows: If the garage has no windows, add them to provide natural light and ventilation. Make sure they meet bedroom requirements.
  • Replace garage door: Replace the garage door with a wall and a standard exterior door or convert it into a large window.
  • smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure safety.
  • Emergency exit: Make sure there is a safe exit in case of emergency, usually through a window or door.
