I’ve tried crazy food mixes like tuna and Marmite. Would you try them?
NEVER let it be said that we Brits aren’t adventurous with our food – because one of our favourite culinary pairings is Marmite and tuna.
And if that doesn’t sound gross enough, how about some popcorn dipped in a hot chili sauce?
Interestingly, these are two of the top ten weird food mixes identified in a recent survey commissioned by LNER Trains.
We asked Sun writer Grant Rollings to put them all to the test.
Cheese + chocolate
There are few dishes that aren’t enhanced by a layer of cheese, but chocolate certainly isn’t one of them.
The problem is that the cocoa completely overpowers the dairy products.
Would a stronger cheese perhaps work better?
Chips + jam
It’s not uncommon to dip chips in salsa or avocado, but adding a dollop of jam on top sounds a little odd.
Surprisingly, salt and strawberry go very well together.
Chips + milkshake
There is nothing exciting about this combination at all – in fact, it is half-baked.
Dipping chips in a milkshake makes them soggy and takes away the delicious crunch of the fried food.
Apple + salt + pepper
A apple A day keeps the doctor away, the saying goes.
But I suspect that a pinch of salt, which raises blood pressure, negates some of the benefits.
Pepper, on the other hand, brings the fruit to life in a spectacular way.
Avocado + chocolate
THANKS to millennials, mashed avocado has become a staple of trendy cafes, but combining it with chocolate gives it a new twist.
The combination of these two opposing flavors, the soft, nutty avocado with the sweet chocolate, absolutely works.
Popcorn + hot sauce
On the first try, the hot chili sauce overpowered the popcorn, but a less heavy dip in the sriracha really spiced up the dish.
If you choose the right combination of popcorn and sauce, this is a real winner.
Tuna + Marmite
As a fan of both Marmite and tuna, I was looking forward to putting the two ingredients between slices of bread.
But the truth is, the salty yeast extract is the only flavor that really comes through, causing the tuna to be lost.
Cheese + bananas
THERE are many ways to spice up a cheese sandwich, such as adding pickles or relish.
It’s healthy to put bananas on it, but it’s a bit bland.
