According to data from Homebrite, the problem is huge: an astronomical 58% of private rented households across England have reported damp, mold and/or excessive cold.

But it’s not just black spores that can make an ugly mess; the widespread mold can not only be exposed to moisture, but also negatively affect your health.

The NHS warned that the particularly vulnerable include people with breathing problems, chest infections, allergies or asthma, as well as newborns, young children and the elderly.

Exposure to and inhalation of the mold spores can cause a range of problems, such as sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes and rashes.

In some cases, mold can also trigger asthma attacks.

As autumn approaches, hundreds of Brits have taken to social media to seek advice and share their top tips for tackling mould.

Among them was an anonymous Facebook user who shared his woes on the popular market Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Page.

The person wrote: ‘How do you stop mold on the inside of the window walls?

”I tried white vinegar. I have tried all the mold sprays. It keeps coming back.”

Fortunately for the anonymous member – and for anyone dealing with this common problem – the mail was quickly flooded with responses.

More than a dozen people flocked to the comments section to share their favorite remedies, ranging from simple solutions to high street bargains.

One suggested: “You could open the window. Then put heating in the room.”

Another recommendation: ”Mould Magic from Must Have Ideas (online shop)….It is a gel that works for a few hours and is then wiped off.

“Only used recently, so I don’t know yet how long it will be effective…But it does work.”

A third added: ”Once you’ve removed it, wipe it down with tea tree oil as it will kill the spores and prevent more mold from growing.”

However, there was one answer that was more popular than any other: buying a dehumidifier.

A dehumidifier, a winter product for many households, works “by sucking air from the room through a coil that is cooled to a very low temperature by a cooling system,” the experts at Breathing space.

The water vapor then condenses on the cold surface and the water drips into the collection bucket below.
