James Slim has shot down ‘heavy-handed’ police officers after horrific video showed them ramming a runaway cow with a police car before locking it under the vehicle.

Wildlife TV presenter Chris Packham was also among those to condemn the ‘brutal’ actions of police, saying they were left with no choice but to put the animal down after it posed a risk to the public.

He wrote: ‘I don’t know where to start with this. But it is certainly illegal and should be investigated and prosecuted.

‘What kind of monster rams a calf? Twice?’

TV and radio presenter Jeremy Vine joined the dissenting voices on social media and shared the gruesome clip with his followers.

He said: ‘Apologies if this shocked you, but I was shocked myself.

‘Luckily we now have Chris Packham involved.’

Actor James Dreyfus decided not to share the curling images, but expressed his anger at the way the officers had treated the ‘terrified cow’.

He posted: I will not be reposting the extremely gruesome video taken of these assholes running over an escaped, terrified cow. Not once. Not twice. Only THREE times.

‘F*** YOU @SurreyPolice.’

Meanwhile, author Adrian Hilton called for the officers involved to be prosecuted.

He wrote: ‘I hope the @RSPCA_official opens an investigation into this, which is distressing to see and completely regrettable.

‘I don’t see any reason for this action: cows can be herded by people. I did it.’

Online users were quick to condemn the apparent ‘brutality’ of the force, criticizing it for not acting in a more humane manner.

One said: ‘Really, this could have been done safely. There’s no need to be so bold. What a joke.’

‘This is disgraceful. I can’t believe what I just saw.’

The cow was loose in Staines-upon-Thames on Friday evening at around 8.55pm, disrupting traffic in the area. Police said they had received several reports of the car crashing into members of the public and damaging a car.

Surrey Police said officers had tried in vain for hours to safely capture the cow, before deciding to use the police car to prevent the cow from running away.

The force said it would be turning to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in relation to the incident.

It added that the cow had since been taken to a vet and received continued treatment after suffering “a large cut” to her leg.

Chief Inspector Sam Adcock said: “I know this has caused concern and I would like to thank the community for their concern.

‘The decision to deploy the police car is one that was only taken after other methods of stopping the cow had failed. There will be an investigation into the actions that led to this, but our focus at all times is on ensuring the safety of the public.”

In an earlier statement released on Friday evening, police said the animal “became increasingly distressed” as it was moved to safety. The cow was moved to a local park where she waited for a veterinarian.

Chief Inspector Adam Tatton said: “We know this has caused some concern within the local community this evening and I would like to reassure you that we are doing everything we can to identify the owners and ensure the cow is seen as soon as possible. by a veterinarian

“Our priority in responding to any incident is the safety of the public first and foremost. “I would like to thank the community tonight for their understanding and ask that they stay away from the park while officers are on scene.”

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: ‘This is disturbing and distressing to see.

‘We will be contacting police urgently to understand the circumstances of what happened.’
