Jamie Smith has had the opportunity to become England’s answer to Adam Gilchrist after he was promoted to open the batting at the start of the new White-Ball era under Harry Brook.

The first one-day international on Thursday against the West Indies in Edgbaston represents the latest White-Ball Reset, with Brook-stand-in Captain against Australia Last September principle full-time at the role after resignation of Jos Buttler.

And while England will give the gloves back to Buttler, the belief in Smith is a movement directly from the Bazball playbook.

‘Me and Baz just have this desire that smudge [Smith] Can be an incredible white ball more open, “said Brook.

‘I am not saying that he cemented his place, but he will get a good crack. He is such an immense player.

“He can play the moving ball, as we have seen in Test Cricket, and there is no reason why you can’t go outside and hit it as an open.”
