Jawan was injured during a gunfight when militants opened fire on farmers
GUWAHATI: Gunfire and explosions targeting farmers in Imphal East and a cluster of houses in Jiribam kept Manipur on the brink on Sunday, with security forces blaming militants believed to have emerged from the hills for the fresh wave of attacks in which a woman was allegedly raped and burnt to death was alive four nights ago and another was shot dead in a rice field on Saturday.
A soldier was injured in a gunfight with militants near Thamnapokpi in Imphal East after they attacked farmers harvesting crops with rocket-propelled grenades. Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi had spent a sleepless night amid the sporadic rat-a-tat of automatic weapons, sources said. The attack resumed around 10 a.m., this time targeting farmers who had braved the possibility of violence to work in their fields. The victim in Saturday’s shooting was a woman harvesting rice in nearby Bishnupur district.
In Jiribam, bordering southern Assam, the militant offensive focused on a string of villages from Jarolpokpi to Mongbung Meitei. No casualty was reported. Security forces have seized arms and ammunition, including INSAS rifles, pistols and country-made weapons, during operations in Kangpokpi, Churachandpur and Jiribam.
