Jermaine Jenas slams ‘SLOPPY’ Tottenham after conceding two late goals to Sporting Lisbon

‘There were too many sloppy performances’: Jermaine Jenas criticizes ‘LETHARGIC’ Tottenham for ‘failing to show up’ in Champions League after losing two late goals to Sporting Lisbon

Jermaine Jenas denounced Tottenham’s ‘sloppy’ performance against Sporting Lisbon and accused them of ‘no longer showing up’ in the Champions League.

Spurs collapsed late when they were beaten 2-0 in the Portuguese capital on Tuesday evening.

Paulinho headed in from a corner in the 90th minute and Arthur Gomes scored in the third minute of stoppage time, just seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Tottenham conceded two late goals and lost 2-0 to Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League

It leaves Antonio Conte’s side with three points from their first two Champions League matches after beating Marseille 2-0 last week.

But even against the French side, Spurs only scored in the last 15 minutes after their opponents sent a player off the field.

“Sporting deserved it in my opinion,” Jenas told BT Sport after the defeat in Lisbon. “There was a phase of the game where neither side really deserved to win, but I think the Spurs just didn’t show up, if I’m being completely honest.

“They got away with it for 65 minutes against Marseille and got the result based on a red card in that game. They came to Lisbon today and never showed up again.

“Individually there were too many sloppy performances. In fairness to Lloris, he kept them in the game. So those two late goals for Sporting Lisbon, I thought they deserved them in the end. Spurs need to take a good look at themselves and do better.’

Peter Crouch agreed, adding: ‘I thought they were too lax and the finish was a bit quirky. Some touches, I thought sometimes it came from Harry Kane, he gave the ball away. There were too many performances that were not at the level expected in the Champions League and they were punished for that.”

‘She [Sporting] deserved to win the game over the 90 minutes,” said former Spurs player and manager Glenn Hoddle. “There’s no doubt about it. They created the better chances, they always looked dangerous and Lloris made some great saves to keep the Spurs in.”

Jenas, who made over 200 appearances for Tottenham over an eight-year stint at the club, continued to pound Conte’s team.

“They will be very disappointed and they have to look at themselves,” said the ex-midfielder. “Oddly enough, the points are on the board in the league, but their performance has been very much like this” [tonight]. Very listless, they look almost tired in games.

“Whether that’s a training situation where he’s still pushing them too hard, or it’s players who aren’t in shape. Either way, they need to pick it up and get it fast, because that was miles away from what Antonio Conte and many Spurs fans expect.

“I honestly can’t think of a clear opportunity that they created tonight. That’s the bigger concern for me. We are talking about a front three that is so exciting. They have so many options and scored so many goals.

“But I don’t think any of them played well, Harry Kane is in that too. Every chance they created was miles offside. They were so difficult in their stride.’
