A former champion Jockey forbade 12 years for his role in the ‘biggest racing filling ring ever’, has been set to return a shock to the saddle.
Greg Fairley was planned for Superstardom when Crowned Champion Apprentice in 2007, and hit William Buick against the title.
Fairley, who comes from Scotland, would go to group 1 glory and massive prize money of £ 2.8 million on the circuit in a few short years, alone in Britain in Great Britain.
But his career seemed done and sprinkled in 2011 when he was struck with a colossal ban for two of the most serious rules.
He was found guilty of driving on a horse to lose – ‘fail to obtain the best possible places’ – and to pass on internal information for reward.
A total of 11 people were punished by the BHA for what was then called the ‘largest racing -filling ring ever exposed in the British racing history’.
Fairley and colleague Jockey Paul Doe were warned about a dozen year, while two owners 14 for 14 were forbidden because they were gambling on their horses to lose, ‘corrupt’ jockeys in the process.
Fairley announced that he had stopped racing before the findings of the BHA were published and, in his own words, ‘away’ away to home to lead a tree surgical company.
His prohibition ran out in December 2013 and he was re -applied in vain for his driving permit last year.
But he got the thumbs on another hearing last month – although the BHA will attach a number of conditions to his permit.
All in all, granting the license paves the road for Fairley, 37, to return to racing in the very near future.
In a statement he spoke to his past ban and said that he is firmly focused on returning to the housing of the winner.
Fairley wrote: “Fifteen years ago I chose a path that was wrong and rightly paid an important prize for my bad decisions.
“I am incredibly grateful to the BHA license committee for giving a second chance.
“I also want to thank Sandy Thomson, Iain Jardine and Charlie and Mark Johnston who have all been very supportive.
“There are still a few elements of the license procedure that I have to complete before my license is published, but I am very enthusiastic to be about to ride again.”
