Jordi Cruyff insists Barcelona’s new signings have rejected better alternatives this summer to be part of the Catalan club’s set-up.

The Barcelona sporting director claimed that recent newcomers such as Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde turned down offers from elsewhere to join Barca, despite their well-documented financial difficulties.

De Blaugrana made seven signings in a surprisingly hectic window at the Nou Camp, spending more than £137 million, according to Transfermarkt.

Cruyff told Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague: “You can see the pride in the players’ eyes when they get the chance to sign for Barcelona and that has helped a lot as they can compete with clubs with bigger budgets and better salaries.

“They wanted to sign with Barcelona and we are very grateful to these players because believe me, they had better offers than us.

And yet they chose to follow their dream of being part of history. When you see the eyes of these players shine, you know you are in a special place.’

Over the summer, the LaLiga side consistently got a win over Premier League giants Chelsea, beating Jules Kunde and Raphinha and baiting Marcos Alonso and Andreas Christensen from west London.

Andy Cruyff’s words begin to sound true when read alongside Raphinha’s comments after the Brazilian forward suggested he chose Barca over the Blues.

The 25-year-old said: “I spoke to Neymar about a move and he told me that if I go to Barcelona I won’t regret it and he was right.

“I turned down Chelsea because my dream was to wear the Barcelona shirt.”

Polish striker Lewandowski was also in demand this summer, turning down a proposed contract extension with former club Bayern Munich to force the move to Barca.

And it is against Bayern that the Catalan giants will be in action at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, September 13, with the Bavarians to a winless point from three games under Julian Nagelsmann for the first time.

Barca’s stock has taken a hit of late, with the departure of Lionel Messi to PSG, their high profile financial crisis, failed attempts to eliminate several players and a scorching time under Ronald Koeman before his eventual sacking last season.

But Cruyff’s suggestion – echoed by Raphinha’s words – would suggest they are once again on the rise off the pitch.
