Jurgen Klopp wants his Liverpool side to ‘fight’ his way back into form after comparing the team’s confidence problems to those of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in recent times.

The Reds have won just two of their first seven league games this season and are already 11 points behind leaders Arsenal, albeit with one game in hand.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has only started once this season in the Premier League for Manchester United and did not appear in the Manchester derby on Sunday, while Messi scored just six goals in his first Ligue 1 campaign with PSG in 2021-22.

Klopp has pointed out that this shows that even the best teams and individuals are at a slump in form, but he has called on his side to come together to work their way through their difficult start to the season.

When asked about his side’s loss of form ahead of their Champions League clash with Rangers on Tuesday, Klopp said at his pre-match press conference: “Do you think Cristiano Ronaldo is at the top of his confidence right now? It happens to all of us. Lionel Messi last season, pretty much the same.

“You have to take a step in the right direction and when you’re ready it’s back (the confidence).

“In individual sports you can fight your way through it. In team sport you have to do it together. It can be more complicated.’

Liverpool were involved in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Brighton on Saturday, in which they recovered from two goals behind and took a 3-2 lead before conceding a late equaliser.

Klopp has maintained that even if his side had won that match, the team would still have been dealing with ‘similar problems’.

He has also stressed that this is not his first difficult period at Anfield as he saw his side dramatically drop out of the title race in the second half of the 2020-21 season.

Klopp’s men, however, came back last season and won two domestic trophies last season, and the German is looking to take a similar approach to get his team through their current predicament.

“Had we won the Brighton game it would have been a different feeling, but with similar problems. We have to do pretty much everything better,” he explained.

“It was only two years ago that we were in a similar situation when we lost all our central halves, but we found a way out by working on it. That’s what we’re going to do this time.’
