Jurgen Klopp has revealed the nature of his post-match chat with Bruno Fernandes following Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to their fierce rivals.

He insisted: “It wasn’t animated, it was the most harmless conversation I’ve ever had with a player who was clearly as emotional as I was.

“It was the situation with Martinez, who went down under a ‘terrible’ tackle, that was clearly nothing.”

Klopp continued: ‘Hey [Fernandes] made a little of it, he talked to me and said ‘you would do the same’.

“But after that it was good, he told me he needs these kind of conversations. Okay, it’s okay, use me!’

Fernandes has been a thorn in the side of Liverpool and may have been lucky not to receive a second yellow card after holding onto the ball when Mo Salah scored to clear the deficit.

But the Portuguese performed at a level much higher than his recent appearances as United took the three points.

Klopp reflected on Liverpool’s poor start to the season, with The Reds yet to win.

He said: ‘I am very disappointed with the result. I’m worried about our situation, but that’s the way it is.

“It’s a game where everything was clear what United would do. Were they more aggressive than us in the beginning? Probably.

“It was exactly the game United wanted to play. That’s our fault, you might say.

“But until the last pass or the final decision we played the way we should have played. We had many moments in the box.

“We scored a goal and it was absolutely deserved, but it was a little too late. We could have won the game tonight if we had played a little better.’
