Justice Roy and CJI exchange jokes about 'intellectual resources'
NEW DELHI: Justice Hrishikesh Roy, who has made a habit of pronouncing the last few words in a lighter tone after delivering the verdicts of benches with nine judges led by CJI DY Chandrachudsaid Tuesday that he had both a compliment and a complaint. After the majority ruled that material resources of the community may not include all private property, Justice Roy said: “The compliment is that SCs intellectual resources are also material resources” and that the CJI has “made extensive use of them” in recent months.
The CJI ruled in all three cases before the nine-judge bench by long majorities: the right of states to tax royalties on extracted minerals, the right of states to tax all types of liquor, including industrial alcohol, and on article 39(b) on Tuesday. .
Continuing his “grievance”, Justice Roy said, “With the CJI remaining in office for three more days, we have to get some material resources (intellectual resources) from other benches.” CJI Chandrachud took it as a compliment and thanked Justice Roy, but the next moment said, “So many intellectual resources have come from other judges like Justice Nagarathna and Dhulia.”
