Kalyan Banerjee submits written apology for comments against Union Minister Scindia | India News – Times of India
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee tendered a written apology to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for his comments against Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. The comments, made during a debate on the Disaster Management Act, led to heated debate and several adjournments. While Banerjee apologized twice in the House of Representatives, Scindia refused to accept it, citing a personal attack and an insult to women.
Birla, however, intervened and said that what happened on Wednesday was unfortunate and no member should make a personal comment against a fellow member.
Without taking the name Banerjee, he said any comment against women is in bad taste and hurts their dignity and honour.
The speaker said agreements and disagreements are part of the democratic process, but no member should make a personal comment against anyone.
“The member concerned has apologized (in the House). He has also communicated this to me in writing,” he said and started the day’s deliberations.
There were verbal clashes on Wednesday when Banerjee spoke in the House during a discussion on the changes in the Disaster Management Act.
The TMC member had alleged that the central government was not cooperating during the COVID-19 pandemic, but Home Minister Nityanand Rai countered this and said it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who helped all the states and tackled the crisis successfully by all to take with you. by.
Rai also alleged that the West Bengal government was trying to create hurdles in the transportation of the Covid vaccines across the state.
Scindia came out in support of Rai and said India had emerged as a “Vishwa Bandhu” during the pandemic and helped all needy countries around the world.
Following this, Banerjee attacked Scindia and made certain comments against the minister, which were deleted by the Speaker after an uproar.
The verbal spat between the treasury and the opposition benches led to the postponement.
When the House reconvened, Banerjee apologized for his comments but Scindia refused to accept them and said the Opposition members should stop making personal attacks.
“Mr Kalyan Banerjee stood up in this House and said sorry. But I want to say that we all come to this House with the spirit of contributing to the development of the country… but we also come with a sense of self-respect.
“Every individual in his life will not tolerate any compromise in his self-respect. Attack us on our policies, on our views, but if you get personal, be sure to be prepared for the reaction,” the Union minister said.
“He has apologised… I do not accept his apology for the personal attack he made on me and on the women of India,” he said.
Banerjee apologized again but the treasury benches’ protests continued, leading to two more adjournments of the House of Representatives.
