Time is the most valuable raw material in life. Maybe John Gosden thought he had no time anymore. Kieran Shoemark just needed some time.
If they didn’t give the young guy time, I wonder why the Gosden’s – John trains in collaboration with son Thady – Shoemark to follow in the footsteps of Frankie Dettori.
They did this knowing that Shoemark would need support. A raw talent. He clearly took the job from the fact that he was not a Dettori. But the potential was to be a high flyer.
When Kieran Shoemark Took over as a no1 rider for the Gosden’s in 2024, he had waited for the last season to get the job he had dreamed of as a child.
Shoemark is a man who likes to do the right thing. In 2023 he told the trainer who gave him the most journeys, Charlie Hills, that he went to Clarehaven at the end of the campaign.
As a result, the hills drought quickly. 2023 was a slow, hard and heavy year. But for Schoenark it was worth the pain.
However, the pain would continue.
Although he would not consciously drive all the big names, because many had retained riders, in 2024 Shoemark had three class acts to look forward to in Inspiral, Emily Upjohn and Free Wind. But all three were past their sales on dates.
In the Lockinge of Group 1, Shoemark Inspiral was for Cheveley Park Stud. She lost. Won stable and owner of the owner.
Cheveley Park clearly blamed Shoemark when they barely used him again. Strangely enough, that just changed last week when he gave Siren Suit a beauty at Ascot.
Shoemark also lost the ride on Emily Upjohn.
All three horses have won no one, including Dettori and Ryan Moore. Dettori had an absolute shocker on Emily Upjohn in the Breeders’ Cup.
Once the old school was tidy, Shoemark excelled with the new children in the block, namely chief artist and friendly soul, who landed a group 1 on Arc Weekend.
This term continued the good work. He acts with 30% victories to drive for the GOSden team. That’s class. Dettori mixed it with 33% in 2023.
The main artist ran a Belter when second place in a job specialist in Bahrain, Zanzoun Scooted Home in the group 3 Nell Gwyn, Gold was fantastic in the Group 3 Craven.
After that success, Gosden Shoemark praised for taking a route from the Rail. The following week he gave Sardinian Warrior a cracker in the listed Queen Anne test in Ascot and only last week was Shaha excellent in a mentioned match in Goodwood.
Then came the field of gold and his defeat in Newmarket in the 2000 Guineas. And hell broke loose.
Shoemark rode Goudveld for a bend of foot that he had shown in the Craven at easy ground of a strong pace. In the 2000 Guineas of a steady canter, he took too long to get started. It happens.
This weekend, Shoemark was set to hold a partner and Zanzoun in classics in France. Instead, the Gosdens use what they call best available.
But it is hard to believe that someone is better for those two horses than Schoom. He drove them six times and won five races. It’s a funny old game.
A week in racing is just a very, very long.
