Kyle found the perfect rental property when his application was rejected… the agent’s reason left him baffled
An Australian CEO has revealed he was turned down for the perfect rental property because the agent claimed he was single and too young.
Kyle Hunt, 25, who juggles managerial work for three companies, was keen to find a home close to work and saw a promising advertisement in Melbourne last month.
He arranged a private viewing of the property and was delighted to inspect it.
“I was looking for an apartment for three months and finally found one in the perfect location, beautiful,” he said in a TikTok.
‘And I spoke to the real estate agent by phone, who was super nice, and booked the viewing.’
But the officer seemed a little worried when he met Mr Hunt.
“When I arrived, his attitude completely changed.”
‘He was very distant and I thought, “Okay, maybe he was having a bad day.”

He said the house had everything he was looking for, despite the abrasive.
Mr Hunt said he continued the inspection quietly. The officer didn’t show any rooms and asked the 25-year-old a bizarre question at the end of the inspection.
Then the officer asked if Mr. Hunt had a partner.
“I said ‘no,’ and he said ‘oh,’” Mr. Hunt said news.com.au.
The property was also listed as a fully furnished property, but when Mr Hunt inquired as to what furnishings would remain in the property, he was told this was ‘not part of his job’.
In any event, Mr Hunt requested that the application forms be sent.
The agent agreed, but after two days Mr. Hunt still had not received an email from the agent.
He contacted the agency, which redirected him to the officer.
He asked for the application forms and the officer told him he didn’t want them.
“I asked very politely… And his immediate response was, ‘I don’t do that,’ and I thought, why?”
“He says, ‘I’m going to be honest with you, Kyle. I shouldn’t have let you see the property because of your age, but you came to the property alone, you’re single.’
The agent reportedly said that Mr. Hunt was not what the agency was looking for, despite his high-paying jobs and mature age.
“He said, ‘We wanted attractive candidates to tour the place,’ and I thought, ‘What the heck?’” the CEO said.
‘I call back to the office, to another broker, [but] when I was on the phone with the agent they said “Sorry you’re blacklisted so we can’t offer you any of our properties so I’ll have to refer you to another agent.”
“I don’t know what’s going on with the brokers,” he said.
The Tenants’ Union is clear that it is unlawful for landlords and agents to discriminate against potential tenants.
The union says it is unlawful for agencies to deny opportunities to tenants based on their race, sexual orientation, gender, marital status, disability or age.
The CEO estimated that it took him another three months to find a property after the ordeal.
Another agent found a suitable apartment for him.
He joked that the whole experience was “cooked” and said he didn’t want to move again.
Viewers of his story on TikTok quickly sympathized with the 25-year-old.
One viewer warned the experience could have been worse.
‘Imagine if you had a dog! It’s going to get worse,” they joked.
Mr Hunt replied saying: ‘It felt like I was the dog’.
“That won’t work,” said another simply.
“The number of times this has happened to me,” one viewer agreed.
But some viewers said the ordeal could have been a blessing for the 25-year-old.
“Rejection is diversion,” they said.
