A 16-year-old boy has been remanded in custody after being charged with theft after ‘shocking’ images emerged of a man being beaten while a girl was also arrested.

The video – which police say was filmed by an accomplice – shows a man in his forties sitting ‘completely defenceless’ on the Blackpool Promenade on Wednesday morning, ‘minddling with his own business’.

The assailant then begins to kick and punch the victim repeatedly before picking up his bag and reaching for it.

Lancashire Police said the victim has several broken bones and severe cuts and bruises, but “fortunately” no life-threatening injuries.

Det Supt Becky Smith said the ‘level of violence displayed by the suspect’ [in the video] is frankly extremely disturbing and unforgivable’.

Detectives said a 16-year-old boy appeared before the Blackpool Magistrates’ Court today and will appear before the Blackpool Youth Court on September 15 to be charged with theft over the incident.

Officers also arrested a 16-year-old girl tonight on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery. She remains in custody.

In a released statement, to Lance’s Livesaid a police spokesman: ‘Earlier today we posted the shocking video of the man being assaulted and robbed on The Prom and we told you that a 16-year-old boy had been arrested and charged with theft.

“To keep you informed, he has now appeared before the magistrate and has been remanded in custody. He is due to appear before the Blackpool Youth Court on September 15.

“We also wanted to let you know that we arrested a 16-year-old girl this afternoon on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery. We believe she was the one who filmed the incident. She is currently in custody.

“Some people have asked why the boy has been charged with theft. Theft is a serious offense with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

‘The offense is committed when someone steals from another while threatening the victim or using violence.

“Once we’ve reviewed all the evidence, we’ll of course consider any other appropriate charges.

“Once again, we want to emphasize that such levels of violence will not be tolerated in our communities and that we will relentlessly prosecute those who commit such heinous crimes.”

Det Supt Smith added: ‘The level of violence that this suspect is displaying against a completely defenseless man minding his own business is frankly extremely disturbing and unforgivable.

The fact that an accomplice deems it appropriate to stand nearby watching and filming this despicable incident without making any attempt to stop it or offer any assistance to the man who is clearly seriously injured makes this crime even worse.’
