Lankan Navy arrests 23 Rameswaram fishermen
MADURAI: The Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday arrested 23 fishermen from Rameswaram and seized their three boats on charges of poaching in their territorial waters.
The Sri Lankan Navy took the apprehended fishermen to the Mayilitti base in Jaffna and handed them over to the local fisheries officials for further proceedings. The fishermen are likely to be produced in court on Monday.
Since January, the Sri Lankan Navy has seized 65 fishing boats and arrested 485 fishermen.
Members of the fishing community condemned the arrest and announced a road rage incident at Pamban on Tuesday.
The fishing community leaders urged the State and Union governments to secure the release of all fishermen and their fishing vessels from Sri Lankan custody at the earliest.
Tamil Manila Congress official GK Vasan condemned the arrest and urged the state and Union governments to protect fishermen and their livelihoods.
