Laura was set to start a new life with her soccer star boyfriend Jed Cartwright and kids in the UK. Then he broke her heart with a phone call and a photo that confirmed her worst fears
The ex-girlfriend of former NRL star Jed Cartwright has revealed how he dumped her for another woman after promising to fly her to the UK to have a child together.
Laura Hawthorne, 30, was preparing for a new life in England, where her partner of six years had been signed as a star player by Super League club Hull.
The mother of two, who had lived with Cartwright for six years and considered him a stepfather to her son and daughter, was preparing to fly there and move there permanently early next year.
But those dreams were shattered when he suddenly broke up with her.
Ms Hawthorne has since posted a video on TikTok about the relationship, captioned: ‘When you stick by an NRL player’s side through all the ups and downs, and he leaves you and your two children for another woman.’
Ms Hawthorne said Cartwright, who left Australia in June to play for Hull, had booked a flight for her to visit England this month in mid-July.
That was “two weeks before he broke up with me,” she claims in the video. “He just went cold.”
In the video, Hawthorne describes how, hurt by the sudden lack of contact, she began scouring his social media and that her “feminine intuition” drew her to a particular woman among his Instagram followers named Sophie.
Laura Hawthorne supported NRL star Jed Cartwright through his ups and downs and when he moved to the UK and promised they would have children together, he cruelly dumped her
After six years with Jed Cartwright, Laura Hawthorne was promised ‘babies, family life, everything I ever wanted’ but the league player blocked her and appeared on social media with his new girlfriend
“A month after he broke up with me, he’s posting on social media with this girl,” she said.
“You don’t go from one extreme where you say you want to have kids with someone and plan your whole life to ‘I have to break up with you’ and block me, delete all my friends and family from Instagram,
“I sent a message to this girl saying, ‘I just want closure, let me know if anything happened.’”
“She’s not answering… disgusting.”
Mrs Hawthorne said that during one of his last phone calls, Cartwright did not even say goodbye to her two children, whose biological father had given permission to move with her to the UK.
He had called her, drunk after a night out, as she was driving her to school, and in late July he had called her for the last time to tell her that their long-term relationship was over.
Ms Hawthorne said that when she first met Cartwright in 2018, he was not yet in the first grade and she was initially hesitant about dating a football player.
“He had never made his debut and his contract was up. So you thought, ‘OK, maybe I’ll give him a chance,'” she says in the video, shaking occasionally and struggling to hold herself together.
“He may not be a typical footballer, so you gave him a chance. You’re a single mother of two children and yes, you were together for six years.”
In 2019, Cartwright was selected to make his NRL debut for the Penrith Panthers. He tearfully broke the news to his father, Panthers legend John Cartwright, who played 184 NRL games for the team between 1985 and 1996.
Former Penrith Panthers second rower Jed Cartwright had planned to fly his girlfriend of six years to the UK, but two weeks later he ‘turned cold’ towards her and ended up with his unknown girlfriend Sophie (above)
Cartwright’s NRL career was a bit of a struggle. ‘He was in and out of first grade really, with a lot of injuries,’ Hawthorne said, but she supported him and his team ‘through it all.’
Mrs Hawthorne continued: ‘Then he signs for Super League and he leaves at the end of June.
‘He tells his family he’s signing for Hull FC. He’s on Facetime saying “yeah, Laura and I are going to have a baby there”.
‘He told me I didn’t have to work, and I said I wanted to work, and we were going to Italy.
“He booked me a ticket to visit in September, and I was supposed to move there in February,” she said, tears welling up in her eyes.
‘I went to the father of my children and asked permission to take the children there. The father of the children gave permission.
Jed Cartwright called his partner of six years to tell her their relationship was over. Weeks later he appeared on social media with Sophie, from Hull, who turns out to be his new girlfriend
Jed Cartwright (above with Laura Hawthorne) had talked to her about babies and marriage, but just weeks after saying he would book her flight to the UK, he ended their relationship
‘Two weeks before he broke up with me, he booked a ticket for me to go to England to visit. A week before he broke up with me, he suddenly went cold.
‘He didn’t call me at the usual time in the evening, he said something like, “I’m busy.”
“Anyway, he’s leaving it up to me.”
Mrs Hawthorne said Cartwright had assured others that the relationship with Sophie did not begin until about a month later.
Cartwright has since blocked Ms Hawthorne and removed all of her family and friends from Instagram.
A month after breaking up with Ms. Hawthorne, Cartwright “posted on social media with this girl,” she said.
Daily Mail Australia is not alleging that Jed Cartwright cheated on his ex-partner and is seeking comments from him, his management and Sophie.
