Lawrence's brother Anmol applies for asylum in the US
NEW DELHI: Anmol Bishnoi, younger brother of notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, is learned to have sought asylum in the US through his counsel. Bishnoi, who was detained last week, is being housed in the Pottawattamie County Jail in Iowa, sources said.
Known as ‘Squirrel Cage Jail’, the prison was referenced on an old radio program called ‘Gang Busters’. The prison’s website contained Anmol’s details and listed his name as Anmol Bishnoi. It says he is being investigated by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), which deals with cross-border crime and undocumented immigration.
While Anmol’s arrest in the US appears to have been prompted by information shared by the Indian government about his illegal entry into the country, sources, however, suggest that he may have deliberately surrendered to US authorities as a tactical move to seek asylum to ask. This development came after Mumbai Police initiated extradition proceedings against him.
Sources say that before his detention, Anmol Bishnoi had applied for asylum through the US Citizenship and Immigration Servicesa division of the Department of Homeland Security. Now that he has initiated asylum proceedings through legal channels, it is unlikely that he will be extradited to India or any other country.
The US legal system’s tendency to grant bail in such cases, combined with the precedent set by the release of gangster Goldy Brar, raises the possibility that Anmol could avoid extradition to India. Brar has also applied for asylum, sources said.
There is also a possibility that Canadian police may try to gain access to him in connection with some gang-related cases being investigated by RCMP.
It is learned that the FBI is in the process of verifying Anmol’s identity, possibly through a voice sample or a DNA match, sources said. The officials of the US agencies, who had confirmed his presence in America earlier this month, are in touch with Indian agencies for further processes, including his deportation.
Anmol, who has been issued a red charge card against him by Interpol, has been accused in several high-profile cases, including the recent murder of former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique and the shooting incident outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence in Mumbai.
Anmol is also accused of supplying weapons and logistical support to the gunmen of Sidhu Moosewala, who was killed on May 29, 2022.
