Sir Jackie Stewart has urged Lewis Hamilton to withdraw from Formula 1 as the seven-time champion continues to struggle behind the new generation of drivers this season.
Hamilton, 37, is sixth in the nine-race standings, which would be the worst result of his 16-season F1 career.

The Mercedes driver has not won any of his last 10 races – equaling the longest run of his career – and is 98 points behind last year’s title rival Max Verstappen of Red Bull.
And three-time champion Stewart admitted he thinks it’s time for Hamilton to pursue his various other interests.
‘It’s time for him to resign,’ said Stewart, 83. ‘He’s got music, he’s got culture, he likes clothes and the rag trade would definitely suit him. I am sure he will be very successful as he has made a huge amount of money – rightly so, as he has been the best of his time.”

Toto Wolff, Hamilton’s boss at Mercedes, admitted last winter that the Briton had become “disillusioned” with the sport after being controversially denied a record eighth title at the final round of the year.
There were substantial rumors that he would be retiring when he was plucked to the crown by Verstappen. But Hamilton, who makes £40 million a year, returned to new teammate George Russell this season.
He has taken just two podiums in the nine races in 2022, taking Ferrari’s 24-year-olds Verstappen and Charles Leclerc into the new era of the sport.

And Stewart has advised him to hang up his car gloves while he can to protect his legacy.
“Lewis is in that group of the Ayrton Sennas and the Alain Prosts — or even the Jackie Stewarts maybe,” Stewart told the Convex Conversation podcast. “It’s a shame he didn’t get to the top, but I don’t think that’s going to happen now.
“But still, it’s wiser to quit than go through all the pain of not being able to do what you were doing before. He has carried the sport well. I would like to see him resign now.’
