Lidl is switching to electronic shelf labels to be more environmentally friendly

It follows a trial at 35 Lidl stores, including those in Epsom and Tooting.

The small digital screens display all the information you would normally expect to see on a label, such as cost, weight and unit price.

All Lidl supermarkets will see the change implemented by the end of this year.

It will gradually introduce the labels section by section over the coming months.

The retailer said the change means staff don't have to spend time manually checking and updating paper price tags.

It says they will instead have more time to focus on helping customers and restocking shelves.

Shoppers have mixed opinions about the change.

Taking to social media, a Lidl customer said: “I hope this idea goes to other supermarkets, saving a lot of time and more time filling up.”

But others fear this could lead to even more changes.

One Facebook user said: “As long as they don't replace the staff and go completely self-service and digital.”

Isaac Ekpenyong, sales director at Lidl, said: “By making changes to the way we operate, no matter how big or small, we can improve the overall experience for those who shop with us.

“In this specific case, we are empowering colleagues by freeing up more time for tasks that directly benefit our customers.”

Lidl said the move will also save more than 206 tonnes of CO2 annually through paper and packaging reductions.

Fellow discounter Aldi has already introduced digital screens in its stores.

The discovery stunned shoppers who rushed to TikTok after seeing them in stores.
