He shared: “I’ve always believed that design should take the everyday and make it memorable. Working with a brand like Lidl for our first UK partnership, which is so well known for its witty and humorous relationship with its customers, was a no-brainer.

“During the creative process we looked at how to combine Lidl’s cult bakery product with our love of celebrating the norm. This gave us the opportunity to think deeply and create something truly unique.

“To make it super dynamic, we made the bag multifunctional, with multiple styling options, so the wearer can put their own personal spin on it.

“My team and I loved hearing what Lidl’s customer base values about their iconic bakery, and we can’t wait for the world to experience our Croissant Bag.”

Fashion editor reveals her thoughts on Lidl’s croissant bag

Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale gave her take on the unusual trend…

The collaboration that no one expected is between New York-based designer Nik Bentel, known for his quirky designs, and Lidl.

While the ‘croissant bag’ is all the rage on social media, £50 for a bag with Lidl emblazoned on the front is a steep price to pay, even if it’s said to be the season’s must-have accessory.

As fun as it looks and as good as it is for marketing for both parties, and as great as it is to raise money for a good cause, we all know how quickly social media changes and that this will be over before a real croissant has cooled.

Joanna Gomer, Marketing Director at Lidl, said of the campaign: “We know our bakery has a cult following and our merchandise has been selling like hotcakes over the years. With this launch, we are ready to make waves in the world of haute couture.

“Nik has completely transformed our most coveted Lidl Bakery item into an exceptional high-end fashion piece, and we can’t wait to see how the Lidl Croissant Bag is the latest, most unexpected item to take the world of luxury fashion by storm.”
