Like a Dragon: Yakuza TV Series Gets First Look at Comic-Con 2024
Prime Video dropped the first big trailer for its new action series, Like a Dragon: Yakuza, during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday. Based on Sega’s popular video game franchise, the live-action drama series will make its streaming debut in October. Expect powerful battle scenes, bustling scenes set in an imaginary Japanese city and tension between enemies (and frenemies).
Starring Ryoma Takeuchi as Kazuma Kiryu and Kento Kaku as Nishikiyama Akira, the story takes place in the fictional Kamurochō district of Japan. Viewers follow Kiryu’s life over 10 years – from 1995 to 2005 – as a Yakuza member while exploring the dynamics with his childhood friend, Nishiki.
The slow-burn trailer draws us in with the darkly lit backdrop of Kamurochō’s nightlife, where fighting, money, and brooding seem to be the norm. What stands out is the zoom-in on the skin as Kiryu’s famous dragon tattoo is inked and shaded. Each Yakuza character’s tattoo in this series has a meaning, and it seems that that meaning will be conveyed throughout the series.
Masayoshi Yokoyama worked on the original video game series and serves as executive producer on the TV series, while Masaharu Take took on the role of director. Yokoyama shared a special message for fans who share his excitement for the upcoming release, calling it bold and surprising. Fans can check out the first three episodes of Like a Dragon: Yakuza when it premieres on Prime Video on October 24.
