Lionel Messi puts Parisians on the road to convincing victory in the south of France

Montpellier 0-4 PSG: Lionel Messi puts Parisians on track to a convincing win in southern France as Mauricio Pochettino’s side-end three-game run without a win

  • Lionel Messi scores twice before Angel Di Maria and Kylian Mbappe add two
  • There is a lot of uncertainty at Paris Saint-Germain with big players and the manager is expected to leave at the end of the season
  • PSG dominated from the start and never looked forward to giving up the pressure

The knockout months after the Champions League are always an odd time at Paris Saint Germain.

With key players and the manager all expected to leave this summer, including two of the goalscorers here, this season has been no different. A series of three draws prior to their trip to Montpellier had really given the impression that this season had become a procession for this group.

In picturesque Montpellier, however, the players gave the extremely disgruntled PSG supporters something to sing about a game away from the summer break.

Two goals from Lionel Messi, a player who arrived with much fanfare last summer but flattered to cheat in a relationship where neither side seems really comfortable, set PSG on their way to an easy win.

PSG have conceded two goals in the previous two games, but Angel Di Maria’s effort in the 26th minute ensured there was no danger of another advantage being wasted.

Kylian Mbappe’s penalty on the hour, a well-taken effort given the time he had to wait, confirmed PSG’s first win after three frustrating draws.

Not that that will control the ultras at home, of course.

Each win seems to only heighten tensions between the club and its supporters, who have expressed their current feelings about the Paris institution since the ignominious defeat to Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Marquinhos had said to Troyes after last week’s 2-2 draw that ‘we don’t play much now, we are champions. We play for fun’.

It was a comment that angered PSG fans on social media and this win somewhat allayed that fear as the players seemed to play with more application and drive.

Their goals, especially the first and second, were well-executed efforts with Messi, Mbappe and Di Maria’s front lines all combining nicely.

The third, luckily for the deflection of Montpellier defender Maxime Osteve, was a well-executed effort involving Mbappe again and Di Maria making the finish which was helped into the goal.

Arnaud Souquet’s clumsy challenge to Mbappé after taking in a cross from Argentinian Di Maria gave the Frenchman the chance to step up and score himself.

Despite an impressive performance from Mbappe here and a clear wish from everyone at the club that he stay, it is likely that this summer it will be adieu to Paris for the Paris resident.

When PSG confirmed the title to Lens at home last month, their fans responded in kind by leaving the ground before the final whistle. How PSG will go about mending such torn relationships is a mystery.

Despite all the obvious efforts from the players here, you don’t expect it to be the victories in Montpellier that will restore the deeply damaging situation between the club and its supporters.
