‘Look at their own record’: India hits back at Iranian Supreme Leader’s remark on ‘Muslim suffering’ | India News – Times of India


NEW DELHI: India reacted strongly on Monday IranSupreme Leader Ali Khameneicomment from the gentleman about the situation of minorities in the country. In a controversial tweet, he named India as one of the places Muslims “suffering” and called for solidarity among the community across the world. The Indian government called his remark “misinformed” and said that countries making such remarks “should look at their own record”.
On the occasion of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, Khamenei wrote on X: “The enemies of Islam have always tried to make us indifferent to our shared identity as an Islamic Ummah. We cannot consider ourselves Muslims if we are not aware of the suffering that a Muslim goes through in Myanmar, Gaza, India or any other place.”
On Iran, he said: “Ill-wishers have long been fueling religious divisions in the Islamic world, especially in Iran.”

Within hours of this tweet, the Indian government responded strongly to the statement, calling it “unacceptable”.
“We deeply regret the comments made by the Supreme Leader of Iran regarding minorities in India. These are misinformed and unacceptable,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
“Countries commenting on minorities are advised to look at their own records before making comments about others,” the ministry said.
In a separate message, the Iranian leader also raised the issue of the “oppressed people of Gaza and Palestine,” saying that achieving the “important goal of upholding the honor of the Islamic Ummah can only be realized through unity.”

Earlier in August 2019, Khamenei had also commented on India’s decision to abolish the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and expressed concern over the situation of Muslims.
“We are concerned about the situation of Muslims in #Kashmir. We have good relations with India but we expect the Indian government to adopt just policies towards the noble people of Kashmir and prevent oppression and harassment of Muslims in this region,” he had said in his post.
