NEW DELHI: Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi set to visit Assam will meet with victims of the floodaccording to party officials. His itinerary includes a stopover at Kumbhigram airport in Silchar, located in Assam’s Cachar district, before proceeding to Manipur, which has been grappling with unrest.
A state Congress spokesman said: “From the airport, he will go to a flood relief camp in Lakhipur to interact with the people who have taken shelter there.” The camp is on the route Gandhi will take to reach Jiribam district of Manipur.
The floods have had a devastating impact on Assam, affecting around 22.70 lakh people in 28 districts. The state has seen a total of 78 deaths this year due to floods, landslides and storms.
After his visit to Jiribam, Gandhi will return to Silchar airport and then fly to Imphal to continue his Manipur tour. This marks the Congress leaderhis first visit to the northeastern region since assuming the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
