Lorraine Kelly and her daughter Rosie show us four new seasonal trends and two ways to wear them

I spend ten minutes chatting with Lorraine Kelly and Rosie Kelly Smith when I come across a family landmine. I ask Rosie, 28, about the first piece of clothing she fell in love with. She turns to her mother, 62: ‘My jeans you threw away, I was smoking,’ she says. “They were Woolworths’ S Club 7 flares, with blue glitter flames down the legs. One day I wanted to wear them and they were gone.’

Lorraine looks mortified. “That was bad of me,” she says. “It’s like what I did to your father.” She turns back to me: “When I went out with Steve, Rosie’s father, the first thing I did was clean out his wardrobe.”

“He had a sweater with sailboats on it,” Rosie says, and Lorraine shudders at the memory. Forget the awkwardness of the S Club 7, the Kelly women are reunited.

This is the double act consisting of the country’s beloved TV host and her daughter, a journalist and podcaster. While they’re excited to show off some of the biggest fall trends, they prefer to be more relaxed in everyday life. “If I wasn’t doing my job, I’d only have one pair of heels. I’m usually very casual,” Lorraine says. “Rosie spent four years in Singapore and I loved the style: flip flops with a dress. They look elegant but comfortable. You don’t often get both together. It’s like Uniglo.’

I’m not going to tell any of our national treasures that she misunderstands the Japanese retailer’s name. “It’s Uniqlo, Mom,” Rosie says. “It’s a Q – not a G.”

‘Is the?’ asks Lorraine in surprise. ‘Look, I know that much. I do not know anything.’

She hasn’t always had such low-key taste, recalling a jacket she wore in the ’80s: “One sleeve was lime green, the other yellow, and there were squares of pink. I wore it to interview Liam Neeson, thinking I was the bee’s knees. It was mouth watering.’ The evidence is not lost. “We have a closet we call the museum for all the things we don’t want to throw away,” explains Lorraine. “Mostly gruesome, horrible things.”

Other treasures in it include a red Mary Quant dress that Lorraine’s mother Anne wore in the 1960s, and some Betsey Johnson shoes that Lorraine persuaded Rosie to buy: ‘They are very cool wooden platforms with a huge glittering silver strap. Rosie says.

Some items sound like they should be out later this year when Lorraine hosts the new Saturday night extravaganza Queens for the Night on ITV. Drag acts team up with celebrities to teach them the trade, and an audience votes for the winning performance.

Lorraine has put on weight during the pandemic and is back in size 10, but some of her social media followers were disappointed that she was talking about her weight loss efforts. She is unfazed: ‘When I’m healthy, I’m happy. That’s really what it’s about. And being able to tuck your shirt into your pants is incredibly underrated!’

Lorraine’s viewers don’t hold back on her outfits. “You don’t remember all the nice things people say, but you remember the terrible ones,” she says with a laugh. “Every day I post what I’m wearing on Instagram and people say, ‘That’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’ One time, someone said, “That dress is too young for you,” and below that, someone else wrote, “It’s a bit shabby!” So you can’t pay attention.’

As for Steve, Lorraine’s husband of 30, he no longer wears those new sweaters, but he still won’t throw things away. “We should do a SAS raid if he’s not there,” Lorraine says. “No, because you did that to me when I was seven,” Rosie says. “I still have scars.” Lorraine laughs. “She’s still not over the S Club jeans!”

TIMELESS CUSTOMIZATION

Lorraine ‘This is my favorite outfit from Rosie. She looks beautiful. It says, “I’m in charge.”‘

Rosie “This is my favorite too – I feel like I’m headed to a boardroom to make some very important decisions. I like Mom’s dress – she likes anything airy with a pattern.’

Lorraine ‘My dress is perfect to flutter in. I feel very feminine without being “girly” in any way.

GLAMORUS MEETING

Lorraine ‘That ruffled dress just looks great on you. It’s very elegant, but you could dress it up easily.’

Rosie ‘It’s perfect for a wedding I’m going to because I can roll it up later to dance. Your dress is great too – you never actually wear high-necked clothes, but they do suit you.’

Lorraine ‘It’s so flattering – perfect for any figure and any age. I feel very mature.
