NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has a total of 28 so far rebel candidateswho competed against the official nominees of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Earlier on Sunday, 21 candidates were suspended, but seven more names were added to the list overnight, bringing the total to 28 in 22 constituencies.
Prominent leaders who took action include former minister Rajendra Mulak (Ramtek constituency), Yagnyavalk Jichkar (Katol), Kamal Vyawhare (Kasba), Manoj Shinde (Kopri Pachpakhadi) and Aaba Bagul (Parvati).
These disciplinary measures come as the party tries to maintain unity within its ranks ahead of the crucial elections.
Explaining the party’s stand on the issue, Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said, “All party rebels contesting against the official MVA candidates would face a ban of six years.”
The Maharashtra Assembly Elections are scheduled for November 20 and the results will be announced on November 23.
