Mahayuti crosses the halfway mark in Maharashtra, closes the match in Jharkhand
Mahayuti has crossed half of 145 out of 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, Jharkhand is witnessing a fierce battle between the NDA and INDIA bloc.
Trends from the ongoing vote count in Maharashtra showed that the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance was in the lead with 157 of the 288 seats, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was ahead with 125 seats.
According to Election Commission data, within the Mahayuti alliance, the BJP led with 50 seats, Shiv Sena with 27 and the NCP with 22 seats. For the MVA, Congress led with 14 seats, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) with 13 and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) with 12 seats.
With fears of a hung assembly in Maharashtra, independent candidates need to be put in the spotlight
As concerns mount over a hung assembly in Maharashtra, both the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and the Mahayuti alliances have initiated strategic talks with independent and rebel candidates who are expected to be “winnable”. Exit polls indicate that 15 to 20 independents could secure seats in the 288-member assembly, potentially becoming key players in a tight race.
Although many independent parties have already pledged support to the MVA or Mahayuti, both parties are trying to maintain their support. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut accused Mahayuti of trying to bribe independent candidates, suggesting their desperation is a sign of MVA’s likely victory. However, a senior MVA leader acknowledged the tight race and indicated that both alliances could win a similar number of seats, further increasing competition for independent support.

In Jharkhand, the INDIA bloc parties have expressed confidence in Hemant Soren’s government formation, with JMM’s Manoj Pandey saying, “There is a clear voice from the people of Jharkhand. Iss baar phir Hemant dobara, Hemant Soren will return. Women, students and the people of Jharkhand have sworn their faith and we trust them. The excitement seen during the campaign and election day clearly showed that we are again an absolute majority comes to power.”
Meanwhile, BJP’s national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala said that both the states would witness the victory of the NDA led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“In both places, the NDA is going to form a government under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi… The exit polls have already come and within a short time, exact polls will also come and the NDA will win… The As questions are being asked about EVM, Even before the results are announced, it is clear that they (INDIA alliance) are already starting to worry about their defeat,” he said.
The counting of votes begins
Counting of votes for the Assembly elections in Maharashtra began on Saturday morning, with intense focus on the outcome of the battle between the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti coalition and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which is hoping for a comeback. Voting results were tallied at all counting centers in the state at 8 a.m., an election official said. The state witnessed a single-phase vote on November 20.
Meanwhile, counting of votes for the 81 constituencies in Jharkhand also started simultaneously. The elections were held in two phases: on November 13 and 20. The first phase covered 43 constituencies, while the second phase saw voting for the remaining 38 seats.
