Maharashtra elections: Congress chief survives BJP tsunami by a hair
NAGPUR/SAKOLI: Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole escaped the jaws of defeat by a razor-thin margin of 208, conservatively Sakoli mounting chair against the BJP’s Avinash Brahmankar, courtesy of postal ballots and recount.
Patole’s day started with a lot of confidence in the wake of Congress’s impressive show in the state in the Lok Sabha elections. Amid changing fortunes, he trailed by 476 votes in round 10 and returned to the lead in round 15 with 535 votes. But by then, as news of Congress’ election route came in, fear gripped the Patole camp.
The last EVM round (number 28) seemed like a nail in the coffin for Patole as he was trailing by 658 votes. But then the mail ballots, which had been counted earlier in the morning, were added to the total, in addition to the recount of some rounds. As the numbers added up, Patole erased his loss and finished as the winner.
