NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra state assembly elections will be held in all 288 constituencies in a single phase on Wednesday, November 20. The voting took place between 7am and 6pm.
The Electoral Commission has announced that counting of votes will begin from 8am on Saturday, November 23.

Important alliances in battle

The election battle in Maharashtra has led to intense competition between two key alliances.
Mahayuti Alliance (NDA): Led by the BJP, the alliance also includes Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction.
Maha Vikas Aghadi (INDIA Block): The opposition alliance consists of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction.
Both alliances campaigned vigorously to gain a majority and form the government.

Exit poll results: mixed predictions

After the voting ended, the exit poll results were released. A compilation by TOI and reports on X from official news media revealed divergent predictions:
  • Six out of ten exit polls were in favor of the Mahayuti.
  • A neck-and-neck match was predicted.
  • Three of these gave the opposition bloc INDIA (Maha Vikas Aghadi) an edge.

The EC guidelines ensure that exit polls are only published after the polls have concluded, to avoid any influence on voters.

Record turnout at elections in thirty years

Voter turnout this year was 66%, the highest in three decades. It marked a significant increase from the 61.1% turnout in 2019. The last time voter participation was higher was in 1991, at 71.7%. Analysts attribute the increased turnout to the fierce battle between the Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi alliances, with all parties working hard to mobilize voters.

Competitions in key constituencies

The results for the 288 parliamentary assembly constituencies are highly anticipated, with several high-stakes battles expected in constituencies with prominent candidates. Observers keep a close eye on these matches as they can have a major impact on the overall outcome.
