A ‘Major Epsom Derby Gamble’ builds on a superstar Aidan O’Brien Colt The legendary trainer insists that ‘a lot of class’ has.
De Leeuw in the winter saw its prize for the world’s most famous flat race shot up after his disappointing Dante Run.
In the past, early on, he hit Ralph Beckett’s brilliant pride of Arras without gasoline on 18-1 to victory.
Desert Crown did the Dante derby Double in 2022, but the foxes and economy have recently failed.
Punters banks on that trend that continue while they stack themselves in the Coolmore ownership for the Big One on Saturday 7 June.
Matdened to 6-1 after his York no-show, the Lion in the winter is now 5-2 with racing sponsors Betfred.
Irish Bookmakers Boylesports reported an increase in cash for the son of Sea the Stars and also made him 5-2 FAV, while others cut him to 9-4.
It is worth nothing that both O’Brien’s Auguste Rodin and the city of Troy flopped before they won the derby.
The strong support came when scratches were made for the derby on Tuesday morning – and as the price of Delacroix went out.
O’Brien’s other star Colt was caught in 5-2, but, opposite De Leeuw in the winter, has seen his chances go out to 5-1.
He is now 10-3 favorite for the French Derby, the Prix du Jockey Club, on 1 June.
Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for Boylesports, said: “It may have been a disappointing performance for some in the Dante, but we saw a big gamble in the lion in the winter to turn it around in Epsom.
“Many gamblers clearly expect that he will roar back in the derby.”
While Betfred‘s Robert Ford said: “Despite the fact that they were eliminated to 5-1 after their defeat in the Dante Stakes, Aidan O’Brien’s The Lion went into the position of outright favorite in the Betfred Derby in the winter.
“Yesterday, the son of Sea The Stars returned to the top of the market next to Delacroix at 7-2 after an important support, but this morning he went for his Stablemate to become the 5-2 outright favorite.
“Delacroix was taken out to 4-1 second joint favorite alongside Dante winner Pride of Arras and Ruling Court.
“The ruling court is currently priced on 16-1 to complete the prestigious triple crown.”
