Makeup artist reveals 15-minute rule to keep your makeup flawless in the heat
With a heatwave approaching in the UK, beauty lovers may want to think about making their makeup sweat-proof.
To beat the heat and look your best, beautician Justmylook‘s MUA Hayley Walker shares her top tips for long-lasting makeup during the warmer weather.
Hayley is a certified beauty expert with over 20 years of experience in the industry.
Qualified in all things beauty including skincare, makeup, hair, nails and holistic wellness, she is a trusted source for expert advice and tips on the latest beauty trends.
Here she shares her nine tricks for ensuring your face looks flawless, no matter the weather.
15-minute rule
Hayley stresses that everyone should use SPF daily to protect themselves from UV rays, regardless of the weather.
And her secret trick? Let the product absorb into the skin for at least 15 minutes before applying makeup.
She said: “If you apply makeup immediately after applying SPF, it can disrupt the absorption of the product. That means you’ll have less protection and the coverage or application of makeup won’t be even.”
rush hour
Hayley also shared that primer is an essential step in your makeup routine during a heat wave.
She said: “A step in the makeup routine that is often skipped on busy workdays, but is crucial to ensuring your makeup stands up to the heat and lasts all day.
“Primer provides a smooth surface for makeup to adhere to and also provides extra hydration, which is essential for ensuring your look stays put.”
Less is more
“Opt for a minimalist makeup look in the heat,” the makeup expert added.
“If you wear more layers of makeup, you are more likely to have a patchy makeup look at the end of the day.
“Skip your makeup look and opt for a light foundation, full brows and glossy lips for a cool, calm and controlled summer makeup look that lasts all day.”
Waterproofing
Hayley revealed: “It can be tricky in the heat, so switching to waterproof products can help prevent your makeup from sweating off throughout the day.
“Using a rich, hydrating foundation base can cause makeup to slide and flake off. So choose a waterproof, oil-free, lightweight base and remove waterproof mascara at the end of the day with a specially formulated waterproof makeup remover.”
Make it matte
“A dewy base is a must-have makeup look, but in warmer weather your skin will naturally look more radiant because your skin sweats more,” adds Hayley.
Instead, she recommends switching to a matte foundation, as it’s “more sweat-resistant” than dewy foundations and less likely to melt or break down due to humidity, helping your complexion look oil-free all day.
Powder power
Hayley says: “Certain parts of the face are more prone to shine in the heat, so apply translucent powder to areas like the T-zone to give your complexion a cool look.
“Remember, don’t use too much powder as it can look cakey in the heat. Make sure to touch up the spots throughout the day.”
Lock it down
Hayley advises beauty fans to set their look with a good setting spray.
She said: “Setting spray ultimately prevents makeup from smudging and melting in hot weather.
“Once you’re happy with the way you look, spritz a few times to make your makeup smudge-free.
“You can also use a setting spray to freshen up your makeup look throughout the day.”
Dab till you drop
“If you struggle with oily spots during the day, make sure you have blotting papers on hand to remove excess oil and prevent your makeup from sliding off,” Hayley also emphasized.
Stay safe from the sun
And finally, SPF is a must.
Hayley said: “In warmer weather you need to reapply your SPF throughout the day, but using a cream will ultimately disrupt your makeup look.
“Many brands now offer SPF sprays or roll-ons for the face, so you can touch up your sunscreen on the go without disturbing your makeup.”
