Makeup pro warns of ‘terrible’ beauty mistakes that add years to your face
The very thing you think will help you turn back the clock could actually make you look years older.
That’s right, there are certain makeup mistakes that can accentuate wrinkles, make your eyes droop, and make your face look saggy.
Make-up artist Alison Gay, better known as alisongaymakeup on social media, explained the mistakes people often make when applying their daily products.
The first mistake is usually using too much concealer, the beautician explained.
“If you want to apply a heavy concealer, be prepared for your skin to look full of wrinkles and lines,” she said.
The problem is that if you use too much concealer, the areas under your eyes become dry, she adds.
“Your bags will look horrible and worse than they were, and you will also look 100,” Alison continued.
So instead of piling on the product, remember that a little bit of concealer goes a long way.
Alison recommends applying a small amount to the inner and outer corners of each eye and blending it out well with a fluffy brush.
But if you want to take it a step further, Alison recommends spritzing a little setting spray onto a sponge and blending it out.
“This helps keep it in place and gives you the moisture you so need,” she explained.
It is also important to place the contours correctly. You should never apply a random line under your cheekbone.
Not only will this look messy, but it will also drag your face down.
The placement of the product should be much higher than most people think. Then create a V-shape towards your temple, after which you work everything out carefully.
The most important thing is that you never blend beyond the tip of your eyebrow, says the beautician.
And finally, when it comes to applying blush perfectly, it’s absolutely a no-go to smile and only apply the color to the apples of your cheeks.
Sure, it might look good when you put it on, but once you stop smiling, it sits much lower than you expected.
Alison explained that when you relax your face, your cheeks will sag and that can make them look “saggy.”
To do it professionally and not look older, she says, you should place your finger on your cheekbone and apply the product only to the area above the line.
And again, less is more when it comes to blushing.
Since Alison posted the helpful clip, her tips have gone viral online with hundreds of people thanking her for the easy-to-follow advice.
One of them said, “Applying my concealer the way you instructed has changed my life.”
A second agreed: “I’m 60 and I really appreciate these tips, especially the concealer.”
“I totally agree about the concealer, I stopped using it and now do it the way you describe,” said another.
“So nice to see the advice on a real face! This is really helpful,” someone else commented.
Biggest Beauty Flaws
Tara Ledden, beauty editor of Fabulous, shares the do’s and don’ts of beauty.
“No matter how much time and money you spend on your beauty routine, if you don’t get the basics right, everything else is wasted.
“There aren’t many things you can’t negotiate, but these are the biggest cosmetic mistakes that are sabotaging your regime.”
- Do not use SPF: Sun damage is the number one cause of premature skin aging, so if you want to keep your skin looking firm and radiant, sunscreen is essential.
- Use of products whose expiration date has passed: At best, they are ineffective and do not deliver the results they promise, at worst they cause irritation and infection. The shelf life of beauty products varies – for example, mascara is usually good for 3-6 months, while lipstick is good for 9-18 months. Check the ‘POA’ symbol on the packaging (it looks like a jar and has a number inside it for how many months it is safe after opening. If you can’t remember when you opened your product, throw it out and start over, marking the month and year on the packaging with a permanent marker.
- Not knowing your undertone: If you use makeup with the wrong undertones, it will never look natural, no matter how much you mix it! An easy trick to figure out if you have cool, warm, or neutral undertones is to check the veins on your wrist – if they look blue, you have cool undertones, if they look green, you have warm, and if they’re a mix, you have neutral.
- Skip heat protectant: It may seem unnecessary, but just like sun damage to the skin, excessive heat is the most common cause of hair damage. So if you want shiny, healthy hair, or if you want to grow it longer, using a heat protection product is essential.
- Not washing your face before bed: it’s as simple as this, if you don’t wash your face before you go to bed, whatever has been on your skin during the day will stay there longer, clogging your pores and drying out the surface. Any skincare you apply on top won’t be effective with a layer of dirt underneath, and you’ll probably end up with dirty pillows too – yuck!
