NEW DELHI: The Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government has High Council on Friday against governor CV Anand Bose for withholding approval of eight bills.
The West Bengal government said the governor’s delay “affects the people of the state of West Bengal for whose welfare the bills have been passed”.
Last year in November, Bengal state Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee had claimed that Raj Bhavan was considering 22 bills, some of which had been pending since 2013.
The Governor’s Office had said that of the 22 bills, 12 were still pending with the state government for clarification, while the bill seeking protection of interest of depositors in financial institutions in West Bengal had been given conditional approval by the President.
The Bengal Governor had said he would implement the Supreme Court’s guidelines regarding disposal of pending bills and appointment of vice-chancellors.
Speaking to the media on completing his first year in office in 2023, Bose said, “Raj Bhavan did not deliberately keep any bill pending. This is a responsibility towards the people. Most of the bills were referred to the state government for clarification and certain bills were referred to the President.”
He said he did not want to leave the bills lying around for long, as they were meant for the welfare of the people.
