Man and woman believed dead in collision on Carwal Creek Bridge after car ends up in creek
An emergency rescue operation is underway to save two people who are feared dead after their car crashed into a creek.
Emergency services were called to the Carwal Creek Bridge, south of Mungindi, near the New South Wales-Queensland border, to reports that an SUV had crashed into the water and ended up in the water at around 1.15am on Sunday.
Friends driving another car noticed the SUV was no longer following them and returned to check out the scene of the accident.
They were joined by a local homeowner and helped a woman, believed to be in her 20s, out of the car.
She was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in serious but stable condition.
Two other passengers, believed to be a man and a woman, could not be rescued.
New South Wales police fear they both died after the vehicle quickly became submerged.
Police divers and accident investigators will travel to the scene of the accident on Sunday to support local police, ambulances and fire departments.
