A man has been charged after he allegedly doused a one-year-old girl with gasoline and hit her mother on the head with a glass.

Police were called to a house in Mount Saint Thomas, Wollongong, south of Sydney, just after 8pm on Tuesday evening, over reports of a domestic attack.

A 41-year-old man is said to have verbally assaulted a 48-year-old woman in the house before the mother and her daughter fled to another room.

The mother tried to barricade the door with a pram, but the man forced his way in and poured gasoline on the child.

When the woman tried to wash the toxic substance from her daughter’s face, she is said to have had a glass smashed on her head.

The mother and daughter managed to flee the house and call the police.

The man was charged with triple assault, destruction or damage to property and stalking or intimidation with intent to cause fear and bodily harm.

On Wednesday, he was refused bail to appear in Wollongong’s local court.

The one-year-old was treated by paramedics and did not require hospitalization.
