Manchester City are nearing the landing of Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji to complete a potential fifth summer signing.
The centre-back has emerged as a target for the Premier League champions and their late transfer comes after he was linked with Arsenal earlier in the transfer window.
The clubs are in talks about a £17.5million transfer for the 27-year-old who is in the final year of his contract with Signal Iduna Park, and talks between the clubs are progressing well.
Manchester City hope to get Manuel Akanji from Borussia Dortmund in this window
Pep Guardiola declined to rule out any further signings for City on Tuesday when asked if City still wanted to do business, replying: “I don’t know what will happen.”
While City look good for centre-backs in Ruben Dias, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake, the latter two have struggled with injuries.
With this in mind, it is clear that none of the four will be sold to make room for the arrival of the 41-cap Swiss international.
After making his international debut in 2017, Akanji joined Dortmund from Basel a year later and has made 36 first-team appearances in the past period.

However, he has since lost his place in the team due to summer arrivals in Dortmund, which include Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule and Freiburg’s Nico Schlotterbeck, and has yet to appear this season.
City have already spent £110 million on three players, including new star striker Erling Haaland, England defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips and Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez.
Akanji would also join backup keeper Stefan Ortega, who arrived on a free transfer, while Julio Alvarez is also part of the City roster this season, having signed earlier this year and spending the first half of 2022 on loan at the previous club. River Plate.
